  • Just alright

This is a low-key establishment that specializes in gourmet vegetarian fare. I was excited to try this place and well anticipated to be blown away, but ended up slightly underwhelmed. Both my partner and I had the prix-fixe four course meal because that seemed to be the way to go. Each course had two options, and we simply ordered both so we could get a taste of everything. The food was exquisite and overall good, with individual dishes ranging from middling to excellent. The highlight of the meal was my first course—chilled almond & apricot soup with fennel, orange, coconut, and vanilla. It was packed with flavors; the texture was rich and creamy without being heavy. Absolutely divine. After starting on such a high note, I was sorely disappointed by the following mustard greens salad. It were oversalted and too wilted. The dressing was weak, and the fixings—melons, grapes, olives, and radish—didn’t really add much to the dish. Luckily, the next two courses took a turn for the better. My main—black rice & parsnip arancini with squash pasta—was actually quite delicious. My partner also enjoyed his harissa couscous; I had a spoonful of it and thought it was a bit plain and boring. For dessert, mine was cardamom roasted peach with blackberry, almonds, and apricot sorbet. The presentation was lovely; each item was meticulously arranged on the plate adorned with cute little flowers. It was the kind of dessert that screamed summer and made for a refreshing end to our meal. I liked that everything here was made of natural, plant-based ingredients (all but two dishes were vegan), and that the food was light and fresh tasting. We left pleasantly full, although I did notice a lack of protein and wish for more beans. My main problem with this place was the cold service. Our server was very aloof throughout. She never asked if we had any questions about the menu before taking our orders. Nor did she once check on us. All she did was bring the food out, tell us what it was, then off she went. So hipster cool that she couldn’t be bothered to even fake a smile. We were dropping $50+ per head and should deserve more than that. Seriously, any busser would have more of a personality than she did. In a city teeming with amazing vegan options, I probably wouldn’t make a point to come here. The food itself wasn’t too shabby, but I have had better and more creative. Price and portions were fair. Food alone would be a 3 to 4; the subpar service made me round it down to a 3.
