- Vegan Caribbean Paradise
Just returned from an amazing week-long visit to The Lodge in Grenada. Mark is a wonderful host and prepares creative vegan food with a very healthy, whole-foods approach. Each morning we were greeted with a different fresh smoothie, fresh coffee, fruit freshly picked from the property, granola, and bread with tahini, jam, and peanutbutter. We didn't do lunch at the lodge as we were off the property during the day, but dinner always started with a delicious soup, salad, filling entree (often, but not always with a caribbean twist), and then a home-made dessert such as sorbet or plantains with melted chocolate sauce (made from chocolate fresh from the Grenada chocolate factory). Mark only uses ingredients that can be found on the island. He's happy to offer you some complimentary beers with dinner or you can buy a vegan bottle of wine. On our first day Mark was kind enough to take us out for a quick tour to show us places on the island where we could find vegan meals, explained the bus system so we could get around, and dropped us off at the beach of our choice. The property is gorgeous and probably boasts some of the best views on the island. There are only two rooms at the lodge and each one has its own large balcony, which is a perfect spot to watch the sunset over the ocean. Even just taking pre-dinner strolls through the neighborhood offers many beautiful sights. As for Grenada itself, if you like Caribbean islands, it's hard to beat! It's small so you can get a true sense of the country. The people are very friendly and I always felt safe. The "bus" system (they're actually vans) makes it easy to get around independently. The beaches are gorgeous and never over-crowded. The rainforest has beautiful hikes, too. I would definitely recommend!
