  • What a cafe should be

Redding, CA is one of those cities which a traveling vegetarian will enter and assume they are in for a difficult time finding a quality meal. Thank heavens for Sue's Java Cafe. This place is a vegetarian haven and, you know what, a coffee drinker, or student, or artist's haven, even. Why anoybody would go to Starbucks after having visited Sue's Java Cafe is beyond me. Our party of four (including two non-vegetarians) enjoyed the good food, friendly service, and youthful, artistic ambiance. Truth be told, the selection when it comes to vegan and vegetarian options is not particularly extensive, but there is something for everyone here. I enjoyed a simple BBQ tofu sandwich along with a veggie chili. The combination, while light, was nutritious and filling; too much salt in the chili, however. Still tasty. Two others ordered the vegan quiche which, likewise, was light, but very tasty. Also, their black bean salad was delicious. Our fourth ordered a turkey sandwich which he considered to be the best sandwich, of its kind, he has ever had. So, truly, something for everyone. For desert we shared a slice of vegan chocolate cake which satisfied us all. The cafe, I must mention, has plenty of artwork on the walls - some for sale. They host concerts on occasion - a band was setting up as we ate. They also offer board games, puzzles, and decks of cards for people to play with to pass the time. We must remember, this is not a strictly vegetarian restaurant - the selection is not what we may be used to. None the less, Sue's Java Cafe is a great stop for passers by and a great home away from home for Redding residents.
