  • Wonderful vegan Christmas meal

Just because we are retired doesn't mean we can't have a 'works' Christmas meal, and this year we choose Stem & Glory. We are vegetarians but have many vegan family members so have been looking for somewhere nice to take them when they visit. We have eaten in vegan restaurants in several cities/countries but I think this is the first fully vegan restaurant in Cambridge. To give a fair trial we selected two different starters (Whole meal bread with red pepper hummus & nut free pesto and the Roasted Vegetable Stack), two different mains (the Christmas Roast and the Mushroom bourguignon) and two different wines (a glass of Wild Thin Prosecco with the starters and a bottle of Novas Carmenere with the main), but just one desert (Raw raspberry cheesecake). The restaurant wasn't full when we arrived, or while we were there, but we felt very well attended to, without being fussed over, and found it easy to get attention when we wanted it. Advise on the menu was readily given and helpful. As for the food, it was wonderful, not only in flavour and texture but also in presentation. The pesto and hummus with the wholemeal bread were really tasty while the Vegetable Stack was just fantastic. Until now I have not been a great fan of Kale, but I have been converted! The two main courses were equally excellent, and again presented beautifully. The red wine gravy with the roast was just wonderful. You are not going to go hungry eating here and by the time it came to desert we were pretty full but wanted to try the raw cheesecake so we shared one and again it was lovely. Both the wines we had were very good, the Prosecco light and fruity and the Novas Carmenere full of flavour but not too heavy. All this, and at the end a very reasonable bill! We will certainly be coming again and will gladly bring our vegan visitors, but we also felt that the food quality was such that we would happily bring non veggie/vegan friends as well.
