- Pancakes!
I saw a copy of their menu online and it mentioned vegan pancakes - whoosh, right to the top of my Edinburgh eats list of places to visit. We visited in August and as it's a little away from the main Fringe venues so we got a table easily, very easily, in fact we were their only customers. We'd arrived about 12:05pm and there was a member of staff cleaning up outside. I asked if they were open and she said they would be in about 20 minutes. Given it was going to take around 10 minutes to walk to the next closest place I had bookmarked and there would be a good chance we may not get a table, we persevered. We walked around the block, I checked online their usual opening time on a Monday (12noon apparently), had a browse through our free fringe programme, then walked back and went inside and took a table. Not really feeling like beer we stuck with water and we ordered 'Vegan USA' meals. I was soooooo happy to taste pancakes and maple syrup - we make them occasionally at home but it's rare a restaurant offers dairy and egg free ones. The sausage was very tasty and quite fluffy inside. The scrambled tofu I felt needed some black salt (Kala Namak) to give it an eggy flavour and drown out the hint of turmeric. The potatoes were good. I left half a pancake til the end to savour and it was then I noticed they weren't very sweet and I could taste baking powder. However, when eating them with the rest of the items I hadn't noticed. Their food and drinks menus are pretty good, but I thought £10 for a breakfast was a bit pricey. Also at that time there wasn't much atmosphere, I'd like to go back on an evening.
