- Great Food - Refreshing Change
Being from the South, whenever I see a sign for BBQ, I assume that not even the vegetables are going to be vegetarian, so I was pleasantly surprised to see United BBQ listed on this website. Unlike the previous reviewer, my wife and I were impressed with the quality of the food, and we'll definitely be back soon. I ordered the BBQ seitan, my wife got the veggie chili, and we split an order of sweet potato fries. We also got a mini pecan-pie (1 serving) to take home. I liked the texture of the seitan - it was solid enough to stand up to being soaked in sauce but not too tough. The fries were lightly seasoned (probably just salt) but thin cut and crispy on the outside. Your taste in seasoning may vary, but the quality of the frying was top notch. My wife said the veggie chili was fantastic. It came with a piece of cornbread. It wasn't as good as homemade (but what is), but it was better than most. I prefer my cornbread to be more light and fluffy, so this was a bit denser than I liked. However, my wife said that it was the perfect density for eating with the chili. It also wasn't overly sweet, which is a common problem with restaurant cornbread. She also said the pecan pie was excellent, and she's looking forward to trying the veggie chili potato boat on our next visit. Finally, a note about the sauce: As any connoisseur of BBQ knows, there are a wide range of sauces, and each place has its own recipe which the owners and their fans know is the best, and no one else's is quite right. My own tastes are toward more mustard/vinegar and less sweet, whereas United's tends more toward the sweet and sticky. Still, it's no sweeter than the standard sauces you'll find in the grocery store, and it's much tastier than those. But given the wide range of different BBQ preferences, it's not really the sort of thing you can take a random reviewer's word for. In any case, for a vegetarian with a hankering for BBQ you can't be too choosy about your sauce - especially in New England. I would echo some of the previous reviewer's comments: It would be great if they would experiment with adding other veggie meats to the menu, and you should definitely give it a try. They do have a few more veggie options, and I suspect the sides are vegetarian, but I didn't ask. You can see the menu here: http://www.unitedbbq.com/home.php
