- Vegans Don't Bother
I waited almost ten years for a vegetarian Indian restaurant to open in Taipei, and was sorely disappointed as the staff here are just not interested in taking the time or energy to understand veganism, so I wasn't able to order anything. The chef insisted that all their curries were vegan, including (absurdly) a paneer (Indian cheese) one. The rest of their menu is about a dozen "toasts" (toasted sandwiches) all of which contain cheese as a main ingredient. They insist that their bread is vegan (which seems unlikely, since most bread in Taiwan isn't, and since they also consider cheese vegan) and even if the bread were vegan there would be little left once the cheese was removed. So there's really no way to know what (if anything) here can be made vegan here, and unless the management invest the time and care to understand veganism, I can't recommend it. I communicated in English and Chinese, and the chef was familiar with "vegan" and "quan su" (vegan in Chinese) but still insisted that all his curries (including the cheese one) were vegan, so it's not a communication problem. They just don't care. I really hope that a vegan-friendly Indian restaurant will open in Taipei in the future, but for now the best option is Balle Balle (make sure the owner GV knows what you can and can't eat).
