- Focus is on Vegetables, not Vegetarians
Beefsteak is OK. Everyone seems to think this is a vegan’s dream, but that’s not totally the case. Rather, this is a restaurant focused on vegetables (if that sounds wacky, the celebrity chef behind Beefsteak, Jose Andres, is a pretty wacky guy). My husband, who isn’t vegetarian, actually loves this place more than I do. You can order a bowl off the menu or create your own. As far as I know, none of the pre-made bowls are vegan as is. So you’re going to make your own. You can select as many veggies as you want and then select a grain, sauce, toppings, etc. It is pretty exciting that there’s no limit to how many types of veggies that you get. The bowls tend to be huge and very, very filling. And I have a big appetite! They also have the beefsteak tomato burger. They’ve told me this is vegan- I emailed to ask about this, particularly because you can’t tell otherwise if the bun is vegan. The mayo is Just Mayo brand. It’s really good but not so filling. Also, it’s seasonal- in the winter it’s a slice of beat instead of a slice of tomato. I recommend adding avocado, but of course this is extra. Nothing is marked as vegan on the menu, which is pretty annoying, if only because not labeling vegan items is VERY unusual for a fast casual/create-your-own restaurant in DC. Just on this one block of Connecticut Ave. there are two other fast casual restaurants with well-marked vegan ingredients (Sweetgreen, Shop House).
