- Lots of vegan options
Janken is a great choice for vegans and vegetarians as it has many options for those of us who like Japanese food. They even have vegan desserts! There were many veg entree options including miso soup. The steamed buns were the best I have ever had (and I don't normally like steamed buns). They were ultra fresh and I liked the miso shot tucked at the back of the bun which was a nice way to finish the last mouthful. Lots of choices for the mains too. I had the eggplant main which came with some very tasty fried tofu. This was delicious and I would order this again if I came back. My companion had the creamy nabe hot pot. This was lovely but the taste was unusual for our Western palates. She liked it but said she wouldn't order it again. It came with a little burner and noodles too and looked beautiful. Only one piece of tofu though which she was disappointed about. All their desserts are vegan and they had a sesame pudding on offer which was not on the menu. We were having dessert later elsewhere so skipped it but they looked worth trying. The staff were lovely and very helpful. They understand veganism and were happy to change dishes (eg taking mushrooms out for my friend who can't eat them). They also have sugar free options on their menu. Japanese food is not cheap due to the amount of preparation. Our bill for 1 entree and 2 mains came to $60. That is very reasonable for Japanese food I think. It can be hard for vegans at Japanese restaurants due to fish stock or flakes being in everything. I have been to Japanese restaurants before and had to leave because they did not have one item on the menu suitable for me. So to go to Janken and have so many options was such a treat. I would recommend it.
