- Hidden vegan deliciousness
Just Greek, located in Etobicoke's Kingsway neighbourhood, would seem like an unlikely haven for vegans. After all, they serve plenty of meat, and the feta cheese is predictably ubiquitous. But if you're willing to ask for a couple of modifications - trust me, it's well worth it - you'll be rewarded with a vegan feast! There are some delcious vegan aps on offer - hummus plate, a few different salads (ask for no feta and they kindly oblige), and the star of the show: Gigandes, otherwise known as giant lima beans slow-cooked in a delicious tomato sauce. Don't skip these - they're melt-in-your-mouth savory perfection. The best on offer from the mains - and, really, all you need - is their Vegetarian Souvlaki. Sub out hummus for tzadziki and leave the feta off the salad and voila: vegan Greek comfort food paradise. The little Greek starter salad is crisp and fresh, and then arrives a plate fit for a king: golden roasted potatoes, 2 skewers of roasted kebab veggies, fluffy and flavourful rice, and savoury cooked veggies, accompanied (now that you've asked for it) by some of the best homemade hummus I've ever had. I've been vegan 20 years - that's a lot of hummus. In short - try it out. Don't be afraid to ask for modifications - staff may not be super "vegan familiar," but they're friendly and patient and happy to accommodate. The food is worth the extra chatting with your server.
