  • Good, but not exactly cheap

I went to VeganoSP last night. I had the first thing on the menu (I forget the exact name, but something with ‘meatballs’), which is a sandwich made from a small baguette-ish bread with some deep-fried soy/tofu balls, tomato sauce, and cilantro. There may have been one or two other things in there as well, not sure. You get a little bag of very good crisps on the side. The sandwich was quite good (but be careful: the freshly fried ‘meat’ balls are PIPING HOT—my tongue is still numb from the first, uncautious bite), but not as inventive or varied in taste as I had hoped. The atmosphere and location in this kind of open-air, backalley street-food truck venue is fantastic. There’s nowhere to sit (some of the larger stalls do have seats, but not this one), but that’s all part of the charm of the place. Unfortunately, like many of these venues that gather a bunch of very original and varied street food under one roof (or, like here, nonexistent roof), the prices are far from street-food prices. The sandwich + crisps was R$ 20 (about US$ 5), which is hardly upscale gourmet prices, but is also definitely more expensive than street food should be.
