- Nearly everything vegan or vegetarian
In a 'meat centric' town like Palmerston North it would be almost impossible for a purely veg restaurant to survive, yet, apart from a few token menu items, this is a vegetarian/ vegan place. I took my carnivorous 95 year old aunt, who asked for ham in her cheese sandwich and got it, but meat was otherwise not very visible. We visited twice in one week during a road trip. I had a brown rice and nut salad, and later a wonderful leek and vege soup - all with a home made whole grain sour dough bread. Husband had a vege burger and later a filo quiche, with the egg replace by a chickpea flour- based filling. There is an enticing range of desserts and cakes. The place was full each time we visited including a long table of elderly 'ladies who lunch' - unlikely to be vegetarians but obviously regulars enjoying good food. Vegan wines and beers are available. The owner is friendly and interested in customers' tastes. The cafe is in a heritage Art Deco building used as an arts centre. Well worth a visit.
