  • They don't share my understanding of vegan

This would be a great place to eat in Sai Kung. One of the only ones that clearly labels vegan food. I was really happy to see it. Fortunately they have an open kitchen so you can see how they prepare the food. Unfortunately they prepare all the different meat, fish and vegan dishes on the same big hotplate. They clean off the last dish they prepared with a scraper, but that's it. So basically half the juices of the last dish stay behind for your vegan food to cook in. I just don't like this kind of cross contamination of my food. I want them to at least try to clean things up. Some restaurants even have completely separate utensils for preparing the vegan food! They do tell you this if you ask, which is nice. Doesn't help much though. This also makes me question how well they check other ingredients to be vegan (like vinegar, bread etc). This part is just speculation though. That said, they do have some dishes that come cold and are not prepared on the bbq/hot plate. I had those and they were small portions, but tasted good. I haven't been back since then though, cause the one thing I need in a restaurant (even more since becoming vegan) is trust. With them not caring how things are cooked in the open, I just can't trust them with the other food either. A friend did contact the owner and he is aware of these problems. He is also kinda ok with them at the moment and doesn't really see any reason to change anything. So for me personally this restaurant does not qualify as vegan. They should label things "99% vegan". That would send the right message to real vegans and people who are just into the healthy eating aspect should be happy as well. At the current state, this just feels like being cheated on.
