  • Head For The Upper Room

What good fortune to discover this wonderful place, for no better reason than an odd juxtaposition of Chinese characters (see photo)! The bottom sign has 生肉 (raw meat) and just above it is a sign that has 素 (vegetarian). So, beware: the vegetarian cafe is on the first floor - not the ground floor! The cafe atmosphere is casual, with wall hangings letting you know the cafe's mission: vegan food, natural healthcare. Although I was initially a bit puzzled by the menu, the owner promptly came over and explained that the cafe offered ala carte or set meals with different health drinks. Most important: at last a break from plain white rice! For the next week I ate there daily, sometimes twice a day, enjoying organic, low-fat versions of local favorites like nasi lemak and mee hoon soup, a multi-grain porridge, and eggless kaya toast. It's a family-owned eatery, and the owners seem truly motivated by their mission, and proud to display their kitchen and explain the preparation methods and ingredients. So not only were my taste buds satisfied while my heart was spared excessive oil and salt, I finished each meal with a mind at ease.
