- Exception quality & selection of ingredients
The Scoop n' Weigh is a Winnipeg institution. I've watched it evolve from a 1970s hippie-Mecca of whole grains, seeds, unprocessed peanut butter and hard-to-find bulk foods in a Grant Ave. strip mall to its current stand-alone store on Taylor, always retaining its unrelenting emphasis on excellent quality, responsibly-sourced ingredients, wide selection and responsiveness to its customers. It has entire sections of the store devoted to whole grains and seeds, flours, dried herbs and spices, dried fruits, teas, coffees, chocolate, dried beans, peas, lentils and rice, nuts, snack mixes and candy, as well as a refrigerated section with miso, yogurt cultures, fresh corn tortillas, local creamery butter, and oodles of other products. There is also a full kitchen section with fine cookware, utensils, linens and other items for entertaining. On certain days they feature baskets of European breads from The Crusty Bun, another Winnipeg institution. One of SnW's strengths is its responsiveness to customers and willingness to stock unique, hard-to-find and locally-produced items. If you are vegan, vegetarian, celiac, keep kosher or have other specialized food needs, you may particularly appreciate their stringent adherence to proper labelling, sanitation and safe handling. Individual ingredient listings and nutrition labels on every bin, and proper bin-covers on light-sensitive items like nutritional yeast. Need chipotle powder, rubbed sage and epazote for that Mexican dish? Agar-agar and turbinado for your vegan friend's birthday dessert? Candied galangal? Apple-juice-sweetened cranberries? Non-dairy, sugar-free chocolate? It's here. Stainless coffee press, Hanukah cupcake wrappers, floursack dish towels? All here. And more delights than I can describe in one review. Just go and experience. Updated from previous review on 2016-08-31
