- A healthy respite
Most places to eat in Belize, vegans will have to ask for dishes to be modified. And, except at fancier expat/tourist places, that food will be mostly rice, beans and fried things. So, it's a truly lovely break to visit Roots Wraps and Smoothies which is all vegetarian and mostly vegan, and the staff care about supporting plant-based healthy lifestyles. I do think it's mostly tourists who come here but it's very casual and relaxed. I had a bit of trouble finding it so here are some tips. It's near the center of town, at a complicated 6ish-way intersection with a traffic director often standing in the center waving cars on. The most obvious building at the intersection is a hardware store "COURTS" which is painted yellow with blue and red on the sign. Roots Wraps and Smoothies is a white and green sign on the second floor above a convenience store type place. There is room for ~6 inside and ~15 outside overlooking this busy street, enjoying smoothies, juices, salads, wraps and burgers. Although they open early in the morning, there's no breakfast menu; it's the same all day. The owner did tell us there would be seasonal variations in the menu as they use local produce. It's largely western food with Belizean ingredients. It is so great to see people sharing plant-based and eco-friendly principles in a place where most people are not considering their impact. The only thing I can think of that would make Roots Wraps and Smoothies even better would be to feature more of the local cuisine highlights on the menu.
