  • Best, most authentic Mexican food in Anchorage

UPDATE (2016): While this is still our favorite Mexican restaurant in town, in fairness I have to update this review by noting that the portions have diminished noticeably over the past few years. The burritos, enchiladas, and gorditas all have gotten quite a bit smaller, to the point where we have to order more food now to be satisfied. It won't stop us from eating there (yet), but I can sympathize with folks who feel the amount of food they get is no longer worth the already-high prices. ORIGINAL REVIEW (2011): Anchorage has quite a few Mexican restaurants, but the vast majority of them are not vegetarian-friendly (lard in the refried beans, etc.). Fortunately, the best in town, Mexico In Alaska, has an extensive vegetarian menu. My family and I eat there frequently, and we always have plenty of options to choose from. We've tried many of their offerings, and everything has been delicious -- I especially love their mole sauce. As another reviewer pointed out, they don't serve your typical Americanized Mexican fare; it's much more authentic. (How often will you find a cactus dish on the menu?) Aside from the food, the decor is pleasing, and the service is generally very prompt. The prices are fairly high, even for Anchorage, but the servings are ample -- and, of course, the food is worth it. Highly recommended! Updated from previous review on 2011-03-21
