• Looking forward to going back

Following a recommendation of a friend of mine, I decided to try out this restaurant, but had a hard time finding it. It's in one of my favorite parts of Los Angeles, Silver Lake, but the color theme of the businesses in Silver Lake and Sunset Junction is collectively a chocolate brown which makes everything blend together. I actually couldn't the restaurant in my car. I had to park and then go looking for the address on foot. When I arrived I realized why I had missed it. Not only did they have a chocolate brown awning, but it was faded and it's lettering is small. I mention this because I'd hate for you to become frustrated and give up looking for this treasure of a restaurant. There was a line when I got to the door. A line at a vegetarian restaurant is always a good sign that the food is going to be that good that people are willing to wait for it. As you wait, you'll notice a large deli case that's almost seems suspiciously turned away from you, mason jar lights, milk bottles of water at each table to serve yourself with, eight differing style paintings (some landscape, some portrait, but all seem to come from or be inspired by the turn of the century) , and in between the paintings are mirrors of differing sizes and styles. True to hipster form, you're not sure if the decorations are playfully ironic, happenstance, or sarcastic. Now you're seated and while you wait for your food, you realize that the booths are an earthy brown leather and you can't help but think, "is this real leather at a vegan eatery?" But then you hear the cool 80's music and you fight the urge to sing along. Now onto the food which is all deli style. I get the meatloaf sandwich on a soft focascia bread. My first vegan focascia and it was nice and soft with a fresh baked taste). The obedient veggies let the barbeque sauced meatloaf misbehave. The 'meat' of the meatloaf didn't have much seasoning in and of itself, but tangy sweet barbeque sauce was a welcome balance to it. I realized that I haven't eaten anything with barbeque sauce on anything for years and how you miss it. The salad was a nice blend of familiar goodness and new proportions of those salad items. Now the grand finale, the best chocolate peanut butter cupcake I have ever had! Moist chocolate cake, creamy peanut butter frosting and a bittersweet chocolate syrup drizzled over it. Amazing!
