"the waiter told me that what I had in my plate was a roti. I felt he was fooling with me..." It is possible that he was being sincere, with no disrespect intended, and that this was a case of language miscommunication. In Malay, "roti" is the word for "bread" - any bread. Since naan is a bread, he could earnestly say the naan is a roti if it was not clear to him exactly what was expected.
