Restaurant Highlight: Floripa, Barcelona

Barcelona is, in a word, gorgeous. This diverse city offers everything from alta-montaña views to skinny Spanish-style streets. But most importantly, they’ve got a fast-growing vegan scene and some restaurants in town that are seriously pushing beyond the boundaries of vegan coolness.

While filming for the documentary series, I was working with two different vegan organizations in Barcelona. I also met up with a friend I’d made while backpacking through South America and we decided to hit the town and grab a bite to eat. Knowing that he’s not vegan, I wanted to find a good place that could whip up some impressive vegan eats so that I could show off how delicious it is to not eat animals. So, I whipped out the ole’ HappyCow app and found myself glaring at a listing for “Floripa”, a brand new vegan joint in the heart of town with a poppin’ 70’s and 80’s theme that was said to be the perfect place to take non-vegan friends. And so it was decided. I sent the owner an email that I’d be coming by with camera in hand and he said he’d fire up the kitchen.

Walking into Floripa is an experience in itself. You’re immediately hit with lavish colors from the previous millennia and beautiful design. The whole place is decked out with furnishings from the 70’s and 80’s and the owner, Andre, told me that the place is absolutely packed on the weekends for people coming in late-night for drinks.

Andre is an ethical vegan with a serious taste for flavor.

My friend and I were lucky enough to chow down on Floripa’s specialty nachos, bacon cheeseburger, and a set of some super fresh juices.

At the end of the meal, my friend told me he’d definitely fancy heading back to Floripa and even asked Andre what time they open for brunch 🙂
