Great, authentic indian food!

The idli, sambar, and pani puri are all delicious! We didn't realize the kala channa had dairy in it so a friend had to eat that instead. Everything else was great!

Thank you

I was actually here way before 2015, I wasn’t vegan 🌱 at the time but my friend invited me here, I always like Indian food, I did not know it’s actually vegan 🌱 or vegetarian 🌱 I just very enjoy it, not sure where his contact is nowadays but I’m truly thankful when I think about or look at those photos of foods

This is one of our go-to restaurants

In addition to being vegetarian, this is one of the few Indian restaurants that can accommodate Jain diets. My husband is very sensitive to onions and garlic and they can make many dishes that accommodate his needs (he often orders the aloo gobi). It is a south Indian restaurant, so if you order northern dishes they are probably not going to be the best curries you've ever eaten, but pretty good. Highly recommend the Mulligatawny soup. I usually order a dosa, and those are best eaten at the restaurant and not delivered. Many reviewers mention the price, and it does seem sort of expensive, but everything around here is crazy these days and it is cheaper than most.

Excellent traditional cuisine

Nothing fusion or funky here, just exactly the standard great food you would find in South India. Great service and friendly staff, and on top of it the red house wine was surprisingly good! We will be back.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Nice atmosphere , Friendly staff

Tasty Sabjis

Got takeout here. All Sabjis are delivered with rice, I didn't realize this and ordered too much. The Aloo Mattar was superb. The Baingan was prepared in an unusual manner, with big chunks of potato cooked in but was still a winner.

Good South Indian food, not ultra vegan friendly place though

The menu said most items can be made vegan and overall the restaurant had good reviews, so we were super excited. When we actually tried to order, the service staff seemed very dismissive about vegan options and they seemed a bit unfriendly even. Since we were South Indians we patiently dealt with the situation and were able to get good options after some persistent discussion.

We got Mysore Thali with regular sambar replaced with Jain sambar, which is apparently vegan too. We had to let the dessert go in the Thali. Then we ordered a Aloo Gobhi with phulka. Finally when the food arrived, we found the taste of the South Indian items in the Thali to be fantastic. Aloo Gobhi was average. I guess the chef is actually a good South Indian person and we should’ve stuck to their specialty. Overall the food was less oily and felt very nice. The chutney, sambar everything was fresh and very tasty.

Towards the end the service folks treated us nicely. I guess they were just very defensive about facing vegan customers initially and later warmed up when we said the food was nice. Anyway, I just wish they were nicer from the very beginning, but we enjoyed the food.

Pros: Decent vegan options, Great taste and less oily, Authentic taste in South Indian category

Cons: Had to struggle a bit to get vegan options, North Indian food taste was average

Still great after all these years

We are frequent visitors in NYC for many years.... been enjoying the South Indian fare in this restaurant for at least 10 years.

So happy to find on this trip they survived the pandemic and haven't lost their edge. Food and service is fabulous.... best masala dosa outside of India.

Pros: Very good good, Lovely location, Attentive staff

Delicious combination platter

Went last night and got #93 on the menu as the waiter suggested, in the vegan version. Delicious and a total bargain for $19.95! Dal, Chana masala, an eggplant curry, cauliflower dish, rice, samosa, tamarind sauce. Couldn’t finish it all. (I tried!)

Pros: Anything can be made vegan , Cozy atmosphere, nice service, Delicious very reasonably priced food!

Remarkably underwhelming

Had the masala dosa and samosas (2)- both potato mixtures contained cashews which I found peculiar, and the breading for both was mediocre at best. Ended up spending $25 for a small meal that could easily have cost only $10.

Pros: Vegan friendly, Helpful staff

Cons: Expensive , Lackluster

Don’t listen to the uneducated haters!

To the lower star reviews calling it not as “spicy”: educate yourselves! This is hands down the best South Indian shop in the area. Do NOT come here for a tikka masala. Get instead a dosa special and appreciate that almost EVERYTHING on their menu can be made vegan!

Pros: Selection, Best Indian breads in the area

Cons: Not your typical curry joint because it specialize

Eh

Arrived soaking wet on a Sunday night looking for a good meal and some warmth. The Mulligatawny Soup was delicious, the rest of the meal was mediocre at best--pakoras, samosas, kachoori. The staff kept running into the back of my chair and standing leaning their hand on the chair back. One didn't get the feeling they had any idea how to make people feel welcomed and enjoy their meal.

Pros: Price, Kosher, Soup

Cons: Service, Crowded Ambiance, Food

Not that great

Went here for lunch whilst on holiday and wasn't the best curry ever. Its all vegetarian so there was lots of choice but the service wasn't great (not overly friendly and not very fast) which was surprising given there were more staff in than customers at that point! Only did white rice (i prefer brown) and the curries weren't that hot, both in spice and in temperature. Have had much better curries in the UK and would not recommend just because it's all veggie. You may get a better veggie curry in NYC by just going to one that serves meat as well.

Pros: large portions, cheap

Cons: food not that great, customer service could be improved

Liked it!!

My husband and I went for dinner last week and enjoyed our Dosas and Shrikhand for dessert.Everything had a nice authentic flavor and the mango Lassi was very fruity.Just the service was lacking some friendliness.Wish they could improve on this, than I would love to come back.

Pros: great flavors, food served on banana leaves, they take credit cards

Cons: not so friendly service, seating is not comfy

disappointing

You know, the food was just OK. The service wasn't rude per se, but was neglectful and inefficient. They brought my husband's entree and my side of raita (which could never be mistaken for an entree), and didn't realize they'd lost my order until I pointed it out to them. Better Indian food to be had elsewhere!

Cons: food just ok, poor service

Excellent Indian food

There are a bunch of vegetarian Indian restaurants on the same block (see also Dosa Hut and Chennai Gardens, for instance). Pongal is arguably a bit better than the others, but they are all good.. The lunch buffet is very good; not diet food by any means, but tasty and well prepared.

Pros: good deal, good food
