Pretty Patjuk

This restaurant/cafe specializes in red bean porridge (Patjuk) and offers several variations of it.

The plain Patjuk (Dongji Patjuk 동지팥죽) is not sweet and is served as a main course together with savory side dishes. Unfortunately, the kimchi here contains fish sauce - otherwise this whole place would be vegetarian. The porridge itself, however, is plant-based if you avoid the kimchi.

Then, there is sweet red bean porridge (Danpatjuk 단팥죽), which is dessert and can be combined with other sweet treats here, e.g. ice cream, bingsu (빙수, shaved ice), injeolmi rice cakes (인절미) and steamed buns (찐빵). Except for the rice cakes, everything contains dairy. ❗ So vegans can either get the sweet porridge alone or together with rice cakes.

The Danpatjuk is garnished with cinnamon, jujube, nuts and seeds and served in a more beautiful way than many other places. Its consistency is smooth and silky. The sweetness is much lower than elsewhere, what I personally find very pleasing.

There is also drink menu with simple beverages such as coffee, latte, matcha latte and Korean teas.

The cafe is nestled in a small and quiet alley. The location is somewhat large and the atmosphere is clean and bright. There's enough seating and wifi available to stay a little longer.

Pros: taste good

Cons: kimchi contains fish sauce, wish there were more vegan options

Traditional at its best

Red bean porridge is a very traditional thing here but often it is too sweet or tastes too processed. Here everything is done very well. Can still taste all the bean! The sweet porridge was so good that I cant wait to come back to try savory porridge.
