Tropical Theme Park in Downtown Grand Rapids?

If you have seen photos of Max's South Seas Hideaway, I think you can imagine the draw of this downtown Grand Rapids establishment. It is an experience of theme park proportions. In fact, as per the description on their website, they take heavy inspiration from Trader Sam's at Walt Disney World. Having been to Trader Sam's as well, I can say that this takes it's ideas to a new level. Literally, it's two stories.

So, the price alone is worth the atmosphere at Max's. It might be the most dynamic contrast I have ever seen in a restaurant between the brownstone exterior and the tropical oasis within. Getting that out of the way, how do the drinks and food stand up?

The drink menu is large and colorful. Just want you want in a restaurant this flamboyant. All of the cocktails come in novelty glasses with accoutrements -- the more outlandish, the better. Past the showmanship, the drinks hold up surprisingly well. There is a subtlety in most of the drink profiles, if you are sober enough to look for it.

Lastly, is the food. In a place like this, I did not have high hopes. Last time I visited Max's, about two years ago, I ordered the cauliflower wings that were disappointingly crunchy. However, they have thankfully cut those wing in favor of much tastier options. We ordered the vegan burger and the vegan noodles. The burger was a cooked-to-order impossible burger with pineapple chutney on a bun that I can only compare to a cross between Hawaiian sweet roll and focaccia. It was probably the most unique bun I have ever had. I loved every second of it. For the side was broccolini that was a rare improvement over the classic, standard French fries. They were savory and sweet in marinated soy sauce.

The noodles were also marinated with a plethora of crunchy peppers and crisp vegetables. Overall, we were pleasantly surprised with the improvement of the vegan food options. Kudos to Max's for spending the time to craft such awesome vegan food for their menu.

Max's South Seas Hideaway is an experience. Take a date, bring a group. It is a talking point in solely the surrounding you sit in. Honestly, it is one of the most tacky-fun things to do in Grand Rapids. And they have many tasty vegan options to sip and sail away.

Fun but expensive

I reallllyy loved my food, but I don’t know if it was worth the price. Drinks were fun, recommend sharing a pineapple drink

There are a few vegan options

I’ve never been to the restaurant, but I did order through Door Dash. I got the vegan cauliflower curry tofu. The portion was large and the seasoning was delicious. Looking forward to stopping in next time!

Pros: A few vegan options to choose from, Online menu is clearly marked with vegan options, Flavor is there

Cons: On the pricy side

Try the fried cauliflower!

Great cocktails and friendly staff. I'd avoid the veggie sushi though, swing and a miss on that one.

Fun Establishment with Good Drinks & Food

Restaurant is 3 stories tall and features over a million dollars worth of tiki art.

The cauliflower appetizer and jackfruit lettuce wraps are both very good.

The cauliflower is one of my favorites I’ve ever had anywhere.

Pros: Tasty Oprions, Fancy Drinks

Cons: Lighting is a bit dim for my taste.
