Formosa Delightful

I can't really understand the bad reviews. The kale parcels, and the vegan dumplings are amazing. Mains come with lots of vegetables, and in M and L size, which is such a good practice. About a dozen vegan options and more additional veggie ones. The steam buns lack flavour, and don't expect the fish to be mock fish (it's like a rosti wrapped in nori), but nothing tasted bad at all. There is a comforting home cooked feel to the food.

Pros: Lots of vegetables, 2 sizes for mains, Interesting menu

Unusual

There is so much I wanted to like about Formosa. They have nice staff, a handy location with inside and outside dining and they are really making an effort by offering vegan food. I also like that they grow their own veggies. But I am sad to say that I really didn't like the food.
I ordered the dumplings and although they were just about ok if you totally covered them in the sauce that came with them, once the sauce ran out they were not easy to eat. The filling was veggies- I couldn't see any protein- and they tasted a btit like compost. I could not eat them.
We also had the Mapo Tofu which is a dish I am quite familiar with but I could only take one mouthful. There was something about the taste that turned me right off.
I am glad to say I did like the coriander pancake and ordered a second one to take the taste of the Mapo Tofu and dumplings away.
I am really surprised by the positive reviews for this place. Perhaps the chef has changed or maybe people are just grateful that Formosa offers vegan alternatives. But I would not eat here again and sadly could not recommend it.

Formosa Disgust

I took some friends here because I wanted to try it and I ended up being embarrassed. While the berry and taro smoothies were quite nice, they ended up being the highlight of our meal. I tried two vegan noodle soups: one lacked flavour and the other was viscous and actually tasted bitter and disgusting. The dumplings were doughy and the Tofu Delight was bland. The only half decent dish was the chive crepe, which was nice and crisp. While there were a lot of dishes on the menu, I would not come back in a hurry.

Pros: Nice smoothies, Nice crisp crepes

Cons: Doughy dumplings, Soups either tasteless or disgusting , Bland tofu dish

Lovely food, lovely staff!

Yes, they do have meat options here, but they seem to shine with their vegetarian food. I believe a lot of the produce is locally grown from the owners garden which is wonderful. I've been here many times now and I always feel refreshed and happy afterward because it's so healthy! Being a university student, the location is brilliant.

Pros: Wide range of vegan/vegetarian options, Light, fresh, locally grown, Kind and helpful staff

Great atmosphere with wooden, cottage style setting. Amazing food, with a wide range of clearly labelled vegan and vegetarian foods, including without garlic/onion. The staff are extremely, and understanding of special diets.
Prices and food are both good!

Kale dumpling

Was so excited to be in Dunedin on a week day when this place was open. It is a mix meat and vege restaurant. Pleasant atmosphere. Nice staff aware of eastern vegetarian food. Kale dumplings contain no onion or garlic and they were able to make a small dish of mapo tofu for me with a side of cabbage and veges. The dumplings were peppery and the tofu was not the traditional chilli but rather ginger flavour. I paid around $27 for it.

Pros: sml selection w/o onion garlic, pleasant atmosphere, nice staff

Cons: not many vegetarian dishes, garlic & onion in some things

Wonderful cuisine and drinks

I love Formosa, they focus on using natural foods and cater for vegetarian and vegans too! This is the only place in dunedin that has Bubble tea (tapioca pearl tea) with purely natural flavours from the tea you choose.

My all time favourite meal is the gingery mushroom soup on rice (vegan and gluten free)

Pros: lovely staff, fresh food, fast

Cons: more vegan options please

I like this place

The food here is all pretty good, and the people who run it are lovely and friendly and seem to genuinely care about the food they make. My partner doesn't like this place much anymore because he got sick of how 'all the food tastes exactly the same' - I still maintain that this is his fault for covering everything he orders in soy sauce and chili!

Pros: Friendly staff and atmosphere, Nice food, Bubble tea

Close to University

The food is good, and the proprietors, who grow their own vegetables, are very careful about ensuring that their vegan dishes are truly vegan. Definitely give this place a try.

Pros: Expanding vegetarian menu

Fresh tasting food - friendly staff

I think the best thing about this place is that they grow many of their own veggies - and it shows in the finished dishes. The food has a lovely fresh quality to it. Unlike many other places, their dumplings don't taste like they've come straight out of the freezer. Good food. Not a ton of vegan options, but more than most restaurants in dunedin, and the veggie/vegan options are clearly labelled. Well worth a visit!

Pros: vegan options on menu, fresh food, friendly staff
