Yuck

The description of the place was a little misleading - we thought we were going to find different chocolate treats but instead found a coffee shop with $9 chocolate bars. We had two 12oz hot chocolates veganized with nut milk and it was $15. We got the bitter sweet chocolate and I could barely finish it - it was so gross. Never going back

Pros: Vegan options

Cons: Expensive , Hipster central , Gross

Fun to try

The sipping chocolate wasn’t amazing, mostly because it wasn’t sweet and I like it sweet. The chocolate taster is such a great idea - we had fun trying 6 different kinds of chocolate. Favorites: Surprise me (olive oil and sea salt), hazelnut, cherries/almonds, and the Mayan came in at number 1. The Paleo Bar we bought wasn’t sweet so I didn’t enjoy it that much.

Pros: Great atmosphere, Interesting surprises

Cons: Not everything is vegan, Expensive

Artisan Chocolate

Prior to their shop opening in 2013, I had met the owner of this business who makes the chocolates. She operate a booth at the downtown Culver City farmers market on Tuesdays.

Came by to checkout the store in September 2013. It's on Washington Blvd, across the street from Shojin vegan restaurant. Park right in front.

The shop feels open and has a large kitchen behind the counter. Several bar stools in front for seating. Products are thoughtfully laid out though sparse.

The chocolate offerings are simple: some bars, a couple kinds of spreads, and a chocolate drinks menu. The chocolates are stone ground and with added sugar but not cow milk. I got both the almond chocolate spread and the hazelnut chocolate spread ($12 for each 8-oz jar). The spread is yummy on breakfast toast.

I've also had the chocolate bar samples and the taste is strong, not creamy or like the bars one get from the grocery store. Current price is $6 per bar for around 2 ounces.

Pros: real, good chocolate

Cons: slightly expensive
