Many vegan/vegetarian choices - even finding one a rarity in this city, and almost impossible in this historic center. Owned by a guy from Norwich England who understands vegetarians' needs. Just ask the English-speaking staff for any help. Their "amazing-and-crazy-hot" chilli sauce doesn't contain fish, nor does their Thai sauce.

In the party town of Rio Vermelho on the road to the Ibis and Mercure hotels, a most unlikely thing in Brazil's north east: a restaurant and bar that marks items not just vegetarian but vegan, too (a rarity). Many appetizers and main courses for vegetarians, and several for vegans.

A chain restaurant found in many shopping malls whose menu has gradually increased its mix of veggie items, now with items on the Portuguese-only menu marked vegan and ovo-lacto vegetarian. Originally a creperie, it now also sells 2 types of vegan sushi, Mexican food including a vegan quesadilla made with soya protein and "tofupiry," a vegan version of the Brazilian cream cheese specialty catupiry plus a buffet with items colour-coded: green is vegan, blue vegetarian and red non-veg. A vegan burger with all the trimmings is also on the menu. One of the crepes is marked vegan. Extensive juice bar.
