Vegan Schnitzel with Green Sauce – Pure Nostalgia

I could hardly believe my ears when I heard that a traditional Äppelwoiwirtschaft in Frankfurt offers a vegan schnitzel with green sauce. As a Frankfurt local, I used to visit places like this very often with my family, and I absolutely loved the food back then. Wiener schnitzel was always my weakness and favorite dish. Since going vegan, I’ve tried many schnitzel alternatives from supermarkets — all of them good, no question — but none ever came close to the taste I remembered from my past restaurant experiences.
So of course, I had to try this one immediately. I honestly don’t have words for how good it was. The atmosphere alone felt exactly like the traditional taverns I remember, and the schnitzel itself was a dream. If I hadn’t known better, I could have sworn it was meat. For a brief moment, I genuinely wondered whether plates had been mixed up or if the owners were playing a prank on vegans — that’s how real it tasted.
Served with crispy fried potatoes (Bratkartoffeln) and an absolutely outstanding green sauce (Grüne Soße), this dish was simply perfection. Price-wise, it’s a bit on the higher side, but compared to the non-vegan schnitzels on the menu, it’s completely fair and even slightly cheaper. The staff were incredibly kind and attentive throughout our visit. The restaurant itself is relatively small; in summer there’s additional seating in the courtyard, but indoors it’s mostly long tables packed into a small space. It fills up very quickly — we were lucky to get a seat, as several groups after us had to be turned away because it was already full. As a result, it can also get quite loud. Reserving in advance is definitely recommended.
An absolute highlight and something I’ll happily order again and again.

Vegan Schnitzel is Great!

For my first visit to Germany, I was looking for a restaurant that would serve plant-based versions of famous Frankfurt/German cuisine, and luckily Zum Eichkatzerl was able to deliver for me.

They opened at 16:00 and my group was ready to dine at one of their outdoor tables and get eating. Their menu has both German and English, and I was able to easily find what I was looking for: a vegan schnitzel with green sauce.

My plate came out with some thinly fried vegan mock meat and their famous green sauce. The schnitzel also came with a side of potatoes to complete the dish. Your slowly pour over the herby sauce onto your dish and dig right in. I gotta give it props because it was delicious and a banger of a local cuisine to get to try.

Our server was nice and checked in on us periodically until it got too crowded. Overall, a really nice place to try some vegan local food without worrying about it containing meat.

Super leckeres Schnitzel

Good "schnitzel"

We had the vegan schnitzel and it was good. We got 5 pieces of soy medallions, we were expecting one big piece but it was still very good. The potatoes were good and crispy and the green sauce was very good too.

Vegan Schnitzel

We came for the vegan Grüne Soße. It was good and the Schnitzel was also okay. I think, other than in different places, they make them themselves. I like that they offer a big and a small portion. The Schnitzel is not listed on the vegetarian menue. The waiting was very long (over an hour) and the waitresses are a bit rude. But maybe that’s just part of the experience.

Sehr leckeres Schnitzel

Cons: Wenig vegane Auswahl

Pros: Aufmersames Personal, Traditionelles Essen in vegan

Vegan Schnitzel & Grüne Soße

My boyfriend is German and he suggested I try some traditional German flavors while we were in Frankfurt. So we both ordered vegan schnitzel with vegan green sauce, and it was delicious. Those fresh herbs and acid in the green sauce really works to lift up the savory richness of the schnitzel. I also tried some traditional Apfelwein while we were here. I enjoy hard cider, but apple wine is a much more acquired taste and very different from cider.

Traditional Ebbelwoikneipe with vegan options

I ate the vegan schnitzel with green sauce at Eichkatzerl. Instead of fried potatoes, I ordered a salad.
I liked the sauce and the schnitzel was very tasty and crispy. But I didn't like the salad at all, it was very soggy.
It's nice that there are vegan alternatives here. Many traditional Ebbelwoikneipen don't have that.
This restaurant is good for an evening with friends and Ebbelwoi if you have meat eaters with you. But I wouldn't come here just for the schnitzel.

Pros: Das Schnitzel, Die grie Soß, Der Service

Don't get the hype

There are mainly huge mountains of meat. Not a place where I feel comfortable as a vegan. The vegan schnitzel was out when we visited, and I've heard it is quite often. (We weren't there late at night, but just after opening on a weekday. It can't really be sold out then.)

Authentic taste

I loved to find a restaurant selling typical german dishes in a vegan version. The green sauce is a very regional dish and I've never seen it before in vegan, but the taste was 100% authentic and so good. The Schnitzel also tasted pretty well and you can choose between small and large. They also had other vegan choices. The outside area is really nice. I recommend making a reservation.

Pros: Nice Outdoor area, Great taste, very authentic

Traditional dishes vegan style

I came because of the good recommendations. I’m really happy that we have the opportunity to try the traditional dishes in a vegan style. The vegan Schnitzel was good, potatoes ok, really liked the green sauce. We went on a Saturday late afternoon and the place was already packed. Very authentic and traditional. Staff was super friendly.

Pros: Very friendly staff

Sensational, traditional hessian food

The vegan schnitzel with green sauce is amazing. The potatoes were on point. They serve a homemade cider. I also enjoyed the traditional atmosphere and the good, lovely service.

Cosy and authentic Frankfurt cider place

It's got a very nice indoors area with stained windows and a lovely outdoors area that feels like a garden although it's just off a big road. The vegan green sauce is a must try of you're visiting Frankfurt. When we were there they currently couldn't oder the schnitzel, but anyway that's less iconic in terms of Frankfurt local culture than the green sauce! You can also get a Bembel (pitcher) of Äppelwoi (cider) to share. It's recommended to mix with water to take off the sour edge

Best choice for Frankfurt specialities

One of the few „Apfelweinwirtschaften“ with vegan options - and they all are great, from the vegan Schnitzel to the salads and the „Grüne Soße“. Highly recommend!

A place to get vegan green sauce

A traditional Frankfurter Apfelwein tavern, which has some plates vegan, clearly labelled. One of them is vegan schnitzel with vegan green sauce, a traditional dish from Frankfurt. It was really good and recomendable. This is definitively a place to go, if you want to try this specialty.

One small downside is that the vegan dishes seemed to be much smaller as compared to non-vegan ones.
