Payment

Sadly to say been there today and today payment method change to cash payment only without prior notice.
Not the first time I encounter this sudden change of payment method.
Think it's quite often.

Wait... long long...

If you have lots of time on your hand, and don't mind that there's a chance that you might not get your order, you may try this place. Such unpleasant incidents happen even during non-peak days (1st/15th lunar month, weekends or special occasions) and, non-peak hours.

Good prata and vegetarian food if you are patient and don't care too much on service

One of the Zi Zai Vegetarian group of vegetarian restaurants within the Tampines West estate. Accessible via a short walk from Tampines West Downtown Line station, Exit A. It has a versatile and comprehensive Asian menu selection of vegetarian delights. Also has Western food options and Prata (which cannot be found in some of the chain's vegetarian restaurants).

The food here is good. Able to select egg and egg-less options.

However, due to price-adjustments (the food here is slightly economic-priced compared to other restaurants in the chain), the version of food here may be a bit watered-down (e.g., mock chicken rice and bak kut teh having less ingredients). Also, service really can fluctuate depending on the staff you get when you are here. While I had pretty alright luck and most of them are ok, there are some who I remember were not as responsive or friendly as the average staff.

Also has different selection of rice (brown rice, white rice and fragrant rice). I love the Prata here, minimum order 2 pieces kosong which also comes with vegetarian curry (milk content though).

4-stars rating.

Pros: Affordable range (individual sets to sharing dish), Can request for less oil or less salt (health), Veg Prata with Curry! Tasty Asian vegetarian food

Cons: Mixed service, depending on your luck, Some foods less ingredients (price-reflected)

Sharing My Personal Review that I experience on 2 Jan 2022

The waiters are helpful and quick.

I ordered kopi siew dai, sweet like sugar.

I tried nasi biryani, rice not hot, not tasty.

I used their toilet, super terrible!!! dirty, smelly and 'insect' everywhere, I lost my appetite after used.

I guess, maybe the crew is young (no experience)??

Pros: prompt response from waiter, selling different types of kueh

Cons: Toilet dirty & smelly, Oily floor

Delicious and affordable

We went there on Sunday and it was long queue.
Love their food but we didn't manage to get indoor aircon seats. We sit at outdoor area and it was very hot weather at 1pm.

Food is very nice and affordable

Always come here for family dinner and it is affordable to share the dish. Their Mala is also very nice. Especially I love the seaweed rice. But I would prefer the aljunied blanch one.

Exactly same as Aljunied Branch

The same menu as in Aljunied branch. Tried prata and Hokkien noodle. Both branches are equally good. Roti Prata is a must try.

Pros: Lots of varieties, Roti Prata is a must try, Conveniently located near Tampines West MRT

Cons: Some items are a little pricy for low income

Tasty And Affordable Zi Char

The eatery was rather packed when I visited for lunch on a weekday, and I had to wait a while for a seat as well as for the food to arrive. The gongbao monkey head mushrooms had a generous amount of my favourite monkey head mushrooms and an impressive savoury and slightly spicy flavour. The cereal prawns consisted of vegetarian prawns coated in batter and dry cereal, effectively mimicking prawn fritters without feeling greasy and heavy. The claypot tofu contained smooth tofu with assorted vegetables such as carrot and cabbage. The egg prata was not as oily as the usual prata from other eateries, though the accompanying curry was a bit too salty for my liking. Overall tasty zi char dishes at an affordable price, great for family meals.

Decent Food

Always come here for my prata cravings, mala cravings because I lazy to travel.
For the Mala I would say is slightly comparable to most mala outside, if you have no “strong” craving, the mala here still acceptable.
But beware of the long waiting time, if you are hungry can order prata 1st.

Worst western food menu, GET Chinese food instead

Do not get the western food, they’re terribly prepared and priced.
Honest opinion on the fish & Chips
The batter is sour and extremely greasy, thick and gummy, probably spoiled and fermenting. The portion sizes of sides are just sad, less than 10 pieces of dark soggy greasy fries and less than a spoonful of baked beans and a messy pile of shredded lettuce.
For the ‘chicken chop’
It’s just a single piece of cheap mock meat ‘chicken’ patty battered and deep fried, greasy, terrible tasting and has the texture of soggy fried tofu. What I expected was something similar to a seitan steak that’s easily homemade, not a deep fried processed garbage.
Whoever thought it was a good idea to make western food menu clearly didn’t put any effort in the recipe, feels like it’s prepared by a kid. I hope they remove their western menu or more customers would fall into this trap.

Sometimes good, Sometimes bad

Food is nice 80% of the time. Sometimes, dishes has no ingredients at all, or tasted like they add too much water in soup, or tasteless fried rice, excessive oily eggs, etc. I still visit the restaurant, as nothing is perfect and I accepted that they are 8/10 😅

Used to be favourite but not anymore

This is a long-standing veg dining location for many years in Tampines.
I remember fondly when I first visited with my family many year ago, it had many items on the menu.
Albeit they did not have good ventilation and furniture then, food was priced reasonably and tasted quite good.
I remembered fondly that I would visit for the roti prata.
I have brought many non-veg friends to eat there then.

Recent years, they have become complacent (prata is rarely available, food is more expensive due to rising popularity and prime location).

I do wish their quality will improve eventually.
Anyways, it's also important to note that not all Zi Zai outlet food quality is the same. Certain outlet is superior certain is inferior, really depends on the chef behind the wok. Message me for more info or if you have more info.
(alternatively reach out to me @haveyouethanherbivore on insta)

Pros: Accessible

Cons: slightly pricey

Variety of veg local dishes

This place has a great variety of local dishes, meat-free.
Most of them use seitan/mock meat.
It's a great place to bring a non-vegetarian friend as it will appeal to both dietary preferences.

Rude Staff & Oily Food

I do not personally like this vegetarian eatery as the service is quite bad, and the food is nothing special. I've been there once and that's it. There are much better choices around the same vicinity. The only good thing is that it is very near to Tampines West MRT. Some of the staff are known to be quite rude to customers at the same time. They certainly need lots of improvement as the rest of the Zi Zai branches are so much better in terms of the food choices and service.

Decent food and prices

The fried rice portion was so huge and for a reasonable price as well. The chicken rice was just okay and the chicken cutlet was not worth the money because the portion was small.

Pros: Wide selection of dishes

Cons: Food portions not all satisfactory

Try their nasi lemak and nasi briyini. forget about the wonton mee.

Nasi lemak, nasi briyini, singapore style fried bee hoon, hor fan, mutton curry rice and fried oyster pancake (oh ah jian) here are nice. Wanton mee not nice as the taste of the noodle "kee" is always there, don't order. Zi char dishes not too bad, quite flavourful but a bit on the salty side for me. Overall still a decent place but However the standard of the food seemed to be dropping compared to their initial stage. It could contain too much mocked meat for those who dislike it. Request can be made to remove mocked meat or to add egg if you wished.
