照覺寺素食館 temple canteen is located besides Chengdu Zoo. Arrive no later than 11:45am as food service starts promptly at noon. Take 2 bowls and a pair of chopsticks and stand in the line. At first you might think there are 2 lines because there are 2 windows but actually the left one is where you pay for a receipt and the right one is where you exchange the receipt for your meal. They offer several kinds of vegetables and white rice. Open Mon-Sun 12:00pm-12:30am.

Nice place!

At first I was planning to go to the restaurant but then as I was walking through the temple I stumbled upon Five Vision Hall or Vegetarian Canteen. I was very lucky to be there at around 11:45 because at 12:15 they finish serving. You take 2 bowls and a pair of chopsticks and stand in the line. At first I thought there were 2 lines because there are 2 windows but actually the left one is where you pay 5¥ for a receipt and the right one is where you exchange the receipt for your meal. They offer several kinds of vegetables and white rice. If you have been to Wenshu Monestery Nunnery then you will notice that its quite similar but there you can get a second portion for free whereas here you can’t.

Cheap and Good

This is a self-service restaurant within the temple. The entry fee to the temple is 2 yuan.

You have to get the menu list, make your choice then go to the sale counter to purchase your money coupons. Then you would have to go to the kitchen and pass to the kitchen helper your list and your money coupons. The kitchen helper will then serve your dishes.

Most of the dishes are ready cooked, but is not cooked in large portions which means when your selected dish is served, it is definitely warm.

I ordered two dishes which tasted pretty good. And all in all, I only spent 27 Yuan which in most restaurant, it would easily set you back 40 to 60 Yuan.

The temple visit is pretty good. This temple is also worth a visit. So if you have time to spare in Chengdu, do go for a cheap and good meal, coupled with an impressive temple visit. :)

Pros: Cheap, Tasty, Impressive Temple visit

Cons: Self-service, good to have 2 person

great temples, great food

This large & impressive temple complex (admission Y2) includes 3 vegan eateries...

The first is the tea garden to your right as you enter from the main gate (not the zoo gate). Get your tea cup (holding tea leaves) for Y5, sit down and someone will come around to fill your cup with boiling water from a kettle. Packets of snacks like seeds and nuts are available from the small shop inside.

The main dining hall (next door to the tea garden) has a large variety of vegan dishes (about Y5-25). Go to the ticket office and ask for the English list if you don't speak/understand Chinese. You will get a list of dishes on a piece of paper you ca point out to the monk and he will tick the ones you want for you. (he keeps this English list under the glass top of the table). Take the ticket to the main servery and they will give you your food, and the pink ticket goes to the rice ladies for your 'mifan' (bowl of rice) if you ordered one. I had the aubergine and mushroom dishes (both great in size and quality).

There were also a couple of women selling bowls of warm soft tofu (to which you can add your selected condiments, etc) at the door to the main dining hall.

The complex also has a self-serve buddhist-style soup kitchen. Pay Y3 for your ticket at the entrance door then go the back of the hall and get your bowl and chopsticks from the rack and swap your ticket for your bowl of noodle soup. When you're finished eating (it's yummy) you wash your bowl and chopsticks and put them back on the rack... it's nice to share in this communal experience!
