Yummy Yuba

An assortment of different Yuba preparations. They will “veganise” the set by making some small modifications. Everything is clearly labelled.

Pros: Good labelling

Yuba set meal that can be veganized

Set menu for 2200 yen, which seemed a bit much for the amount served. Really, you can just walk 10 more minutes to the Lion D'Or grocery store near the train stations and pick up a variety of differently-prepared yubas and have a very similar experience for a significantly less. A couple items on the regular set menu have dashi and/or gelatin, so can be left off for vegans and vegetarians (though without being replaced by something else 😞). Yuba is a Nikko speciality, so worth trying here if yuba isn't something you can get where you come from - though there wasn't much of a variety in the taste or texture profile of most of the items served.

Very tasty Yuba set

Its possible to veganize the set (water/soy sauce instead of the Dashi), one item is made with gelatin (this is the only item they can't replace)

Great for tofu lovers

You write your name on a sheet and wait for your party to be called. Hot tea is served when you're sitted.

I showed one of the staff members the message I usually show* and she was very eager to explain that out of the 12 dishes in the set, two would be adapted (water instead of dashi) and one would not be served (coffee dessert containing "jelly"). This info is also included on the English menu with a clearly labeled picture of each dish.

If you're a fan of tofu, this is a nice place to try different variations of it, from bland to sweet to savory. It was the largest serving of tofu I've had so far in Japan (if protein is something you pay attention to) - two of us weren't even able to finish it.

Set is the same for everyone (priced at ¥2200) so the service is fast. They also offer drinks and desserts, but I did not ask which were vegan.

[Sorry, but I'm a vegan. I can't eat meat, chicken, fish (including dashi broth), eggs or dairy products.]

Pros: Staff eagerly welcomes vegans, you get to try different tofu variations, portion size was quite filling

Cons: There is only one fixed set, 1 out of 12 dishes in the set is removed, cash only
