Favorite meal in Hakodate - Edit
This was one of my favorite meals in Japan! The owner is very sweet and the food was delicious. We ordered the curry plate and homemade umeshu (plum wine). It was a full and satisfying meal. The menu is clearly labeled as vegan in English. The umeshu was a lovely treat. Highly recommend! The only down side is that it’s only open for a few nights a week. A must visit!

Tasty and filling - Edit
There are not many reliable vegan options in Hakodate that are open after 6pm, so we were very happy to learn about this place on Happy Cow. We visited on both nights we were in Hakodate. I contacted the restaurant via Facebook messenger in advance (in English) to reserve and everything went smoothly.
Read moreThe menu isn't too extensive. We tried four dishes, and there was maybe 1-2 more that we didn't get to try. We had the fried meat set, curry set, gyoza set, and teriyaki meat set. Truthfully, the food was more like three stars than four, but they earn the extra star by being one of the few decent options in town and providing good service.
The fried meat set was karaage like, but the texture wasn't as good as some we recently had in Tokyo. The curry was fantastic, really flavoursome, though the texture of the carrots and meat were a little soft. The gyoza were very pleasant and quite generously filled. I loved the teriyaki meat, it was really tasty, though again the texture wasn't quite perfect.
All of these dishes were served with rice, salad, pickles, mashed potato, and a slice of deep fried konjac. This meant the dishes were very filling and balanced.
The servers didn't speak much English and we don't speak any Japanese, but everything went really well and with some translation it was all perfect. They were really friendly and accommodating. The menu is in both English and Japanese. We would happily return if we were back in Hakodate.

Amazing experience - Edit
Omakase style serving . Such a variety of delicious and inventive foods. It was somewhat difficult the find the place because it’s tucked back down an alley in an unassuming location. Upon entering, I was greeted in a very inviting manner by the server. I was given slippers to change out from my shoes before entering the dining room. It was the most colorful plate of food I have ever eaten ! It was reasonably priced and the service and food were both fantastic. Although there was a language barrier, the owners, husband and wife, both came out to the dining room to greet me and were especially patient with answering my questions. I will never forget this place. CASH ONLY

Great little Japanese vegan place - Edit
A little hard to find, but worth it. First time we’ve eaten traditional Japanese vegan food, and we both enjoyed it. The owner chef is also very friendly and gave us a list other local vegan restaurants. She recommends we make reservations.

Btw it’s really tiny and cozy. Looks like it’s a converted living room, dining room and kitchen.
Pros: Food is good, Owner is very friendly
Cons: Food in other people’s pictures looked better 😕, Hard to find, Limited hours

BEST vegan food in Hakodate - Edit
During my four day stay in Hakodate I went to Rumikos Bar four times. There is no sign at the building you just have to go through the sliding door :-)

Great food, great host - Edit
A good pick for your stay in Hakodate. The restaurant was easy to find *once I used the directions posted in another user’s review.* Don’t follow the Happy Cow map — it’ll take you to Hakodate City Hall😡 I posted some photos to help first-timers locate it.
Read moreI got the veggie set meal (about 2,000 yen), which included tempura, pickles, a few small dishes of other veggies, miso soup and brown rice. See posted photo. It was great, and filling. I left very satisfied.
The host was really nice. Talked to me for awhile after my meal, and gave me a map of other vegetarian restaurants in Hakodate. I would eat here just to support her, to be honest. Doesn’t hurt that I loved the food, too.
Pros: Tasty set meal, Good portions, Warm host

Best Vegan Sushi Ever - Edit
Visiting Hakodate for a music festival, six of us tracked down Yasai Bar Miruya and tumbled in the door of this tiny bar. The hostess invited us to wait 40 minutes until the rice cooked and then served us a delicious vegan dinner set. The food was so good, that we booked to return the following night and were served the best vegan sushi I have eaten in my 4 years living in Japan. Six exquisite pieces, each topped with a different taste: mushroom, tofu and seasonal vegetables. We even tasted local rice based beer! Our hostess was friendly, spoke some English and used a translator for details about the food. Treat yourself to the best vegan sushi ever!
