15-3 Higashi Hakushima-cho, Naka ward, Hiroshima, Japan, 730-0004

Serves meat, vegan options available. Okonomiyaki eatery 10 minutes from Hiroshima station, by Hakushima tram stop. Has an English menu that states "no egg or no meat - no problem!" Okonomiyaki can be requested vegetarian or vegan, and a variety of veg toppings and side dishes including fresh tofu, fried leeks, marinated cucumber or sweet potato, and sweet potato omelette. Staff is accommodating. Note: In Japan kitchens often stop serving 30-60 minutes before closing time. Call ahead to confirm.

Amazing! - Edit

Went there for dinner twice. The people are extremely friendly and accommodating. We got vegan okonomiyaki with lots of veggies and delicious sauce. We preferred the soba noodle type. The soy sauce tofu was also delicious.
It's cheap and a fun place to be in, with lots of locals and food you can't find everywhere.
Give it a try!
We don't know the opening hours but it was open on Friday and Saturday night.

Pros: vegan options (ask), cheap, local place

Happiness - Edit

Just a cosy, happy feeling, Japanese eatery. Everything is made out in the open with love and care. Ridiculously delicious okonomiyaki and local beer on tap.

yakeppachi - Edit

if you enjoyed the japanese movie "midnight diner", you'll love this neighbourhood joint. it's a little further from the peace park/hondori tourist district - about 10 minutes' walk from shukkei-en, and four tram stops or a 16-minute walk from hatcho-bori tram station (w1/m7). the nearest tram stop to the restaurant is hakushima station (route 9, w5).

one thing i miss from my non-veggie days in japan are the rough, hole-in-the-wall eateries with push-button machines. selecting your meal at yakeppachi doesn't involve pressing a button (they thankfully have an english menu), but is nonetheless full of local flavour and character. the few customers who were there appeared to be local, except for a mixed couple and their baby. it was the most down-to-earth of the eateries i visited in hiroshima that's listed on happy cow.

i was presented with a hot towel on being seated at the bar table and the female waitress who attended to me spoke a little english and understood what a plant-based okonomiyaki meant ("da-meh" everything).

i don't understand japanese, but could feel the warmth and casual ease amongst boss, staff and customers. the boss and staff were very friendly, and the former made an effort to make a bit of conversation with me. ambience-wise, it was a stark contrast compared to the slightly bigger and more touristy nagataya.

i'd highly recommend this place if you have the luxury of time to travel slightly further afield.

caveat: this would not be suitable for strict vegans as food is cooked on the same grill though individual meal areas are cleaned thoroughly after customers leave. i did not notice whether utensils are change for veg dishes.

Pros: local, neighbourhood feel, warm and friendly staff, english menu ("no egg or no meat, no problem")

Perfect Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki - Edit

We wanted to taste Hiroshima okonomiyaki and we were not disappointed! The cook asked if we were vegan and prepared a very nice okonomiyaki in front of us. For 2 people + 2 drinks we paid 1900 yen. It is a very nice restaurant which seems to be very appreciated by locals.

Pros: Excellent food, Good value, Friendly staff

Cons: No

Excellent vegan okonomiyaki! - Edit

I asked in Japanese if vegan okonomiyaki is possible and the people in the restaurant said sure! It was really tasty, made with separate ingredients/spatulas than was used for the meat/egg dishes there. They were really nice and it was a fun atmosphere - got to watch a Hiroshima Carp game in there with some locals. Highly recommend this place!

Pros: Tasty vegan options, Nice staff

Cons: Smoking is allowed in here, so if you don't like s

great authentic hiroshima place - Edit

we loved how authentic the place felt - it's a proper japanese bar/okonomiyaki restaurant where chief prepares all the food in front of the guests. the place was full with locals which made it an interesting experience. menu was a little confusing for the vegan, I asked the chief about food with no egg and no meat and he offered to make me yaki-soba which was absolutely delicious. a great place to try some hiroshima food without stressing out about ingredients!

Pros: authentic feeling, good price

Awesome restaurant - Edit

There aren't too many places in Japan that are so accommodating to veggos or vegans however Yakeppachi is an exception. The super friendly and helpful staff knew exactly what we wanted when we requested vegetarian and repeated "no meat, no egg and no fish" back to us which was comforting. So may other restaurants seem to think fish is ok for veggos. The experience was enhanced by being able to watch the chef prepare our meal which was delicious and just as we ordered. It was pouring rain when we left and the staff ensured we had a decent umbrella, even offering us two of their own.

A very warm and friendly establishment with an authentic feel. Highly recommended this reassuring of staying in Hiroshima and only a short stroll from a train station.

Pros: delicious , friendly

Friendly veg-friendly! - Edit

The very friendly staff at Yakeppachi were excited to speak to foreigners, making a big effort to speak in English and even Spanish while also patiently processing my garbled Japanese. They also have an English menu, so ordering is easy.

Their okonomiyaki (which are prepared and served on a big grill in the center of the table) can be made vegetarian (without meat) or vegan (without meat or egg), and you can request vegan toppings and a variety of vegan japanese sides. When ordering, be sure to ask for "katsuo nashi" so they don't put bonito flakes on your dish. As they serve meat, it's a good idea to confirm "niku nashi, tamago nashi, sakana nashi, katsuo nashi" with every dish - even though they catch on quickly, it's always good to be sure!

This neighborhood okonomiyaki place frequented by locals and run by (what seems to be) one family is open fairly late by Japanese standards, and is a good bet if you are veg and hungry in this area of Hiroshima, where thee aren't other listings on HappyCow as of December 2014. Plus, it is nice to be able to eat local food while vegetarian! We went there twice - I definitely recommend it.

Pros: friendly staff, very tasty local food, inexpensive and accessible

Cons: serves meat, people smoke inside, have to clearly specify vegan!
