Yabuhan

My first experience at a soba house which offered a traditional and authentic Japanese meal, it was super clear which items were vegan as well as lots of history about buckwheat soba noodles... The audience, food and style was 10/10 this is a must go if you are in otaru even for non vegan peps! Lots of options for everyone...ooooh I nearly forgot to mention the gin is UNREAL and I am not a gin lover

Great vegetarian and vegan options

Lovely cosy spot near the Otaru train station. Super busy but definitely worth the wait. Their menu clearly stated allergens/dietary for each option including vegetarian, vegan, lacto, dairy free etc. Some of the best soba I had in Japan

Pros: Dietary options clearly labelled, Friendly staff

Cons: Busy - could lead to a long wait

Best to make a reservation, lots of vegan options

My husband and I visited this restaurant on July 17, 2023. We made a reservation by phone on the same day at around 3pm for dinner at 5pm. We told them we are vegan on the phone. When we got there, we were seated right away and they brought us an English menu that had the vegan options clearly marked.

The restaurant was pretty crowded and as we were leaving there were several people waiting to be seated. I definitely recommend making a reservation in advance and coming at 5pm if you can as it seems to get more crowded as it gets later.

The food was good (normal). There were several kinds of soba dishes and also some appetizers for us to choose from. My husband got the hot nameko soba and I got the sobagaki. I had never tried sobagaki before, so that's why I chose it. It was alright, but I think I prefer normal soba. The appetizers came with soy sauce and fresh wasabi which we grated ourselves.

I wouldn't go out of my way to come here necessarily, but since there are very few vegan options in this town (especially for dinner), we will likely go again next time we visit Otaru.

Pros: clearly marked menu, easy to order, make a reservation, good service

Cons: kind of crowded, better to reserve a table, food was good, but nothing special in my opinion

Nice soba and udon

Nice soba and udon place in Otaru, perfect after some window shopping near the canal.
We had to wait a bit until we got a table but it was worth the time. Both the appetisers and the main dishes (udon and soba) were tasty. The staff asked about vegetarian/ vegan preferences and everything was clearly labelled in their menu as well.

Pros: Nice taste, Decent price

Cons: You might have to wait a bit to get a table

Well communicated options, friendly staff, beautiful setting

This was a great restaurant that was hard to spot from the outside, but quite big inside. We waited in a queue for about 15 minutes but it was in the warm so we didn't mind.

The menu was clearly presented in English with markers showing which dishes were vegan, vegetarian and how others could be made vegan or vegetarian.

We had the hot soba with tempura and the hot soba with tiny mushrooms and grated radish - can't remember the proper names of the dishes. They were both great, but our favourite thing was the tofu appetiser which I'd definitely recommend (not in the pictures because we'd already destroyed it).

Definitely stop by if you're visiting Otaru.

Pros: Delicious food, Beautiful restaurant, Free 'soba tea' brought to the table

Cons: Quite busy - 15 minute wait, even at 14:00

Pros: Delicious food, Calm atmosphere, Great service

Cons: Limited vegan options, Popular spot meant a little bit of a wait

Traditional Japanese experience

An excellent option for a meal in Otaru. Very easy to order from an English menu, with the option to change from a dashi/bonito stock to konbu. Numerous cold soba options, but not many hot choices. A couple of small sides (miso leek and tofu). I was surprised at just how flavoursome a bowl of hot soba could be! Very affordable for the size of the meal. It provides a traditional Japanese experience and should be added to your itinerary!

Pros: Close to Otaru station, Brilliant Japanese experience , Very delicious soba

Cons: Not many hot options

Delicious!

Very beautiful Japanese restaurant. Staff are very friendly. The menu clearly label if the restaurant can do that particular dish in Vegetarian and Vegan style. Expensive at about 1400 Yen, but food was worth the price. The soba sauce was delicious. Good to visit if you are traveling to Otaru.

Pros: Quite a number of vegetarian and vegan options

Cons: Could give more vegetable tempura

Prefectural vegan soba

Had a stop in Otaru and this was the only place that came up on HappyCow; a cute old fashioned so aha with separate smoking and non-smoking areas. I speak Japanese but they have an English menu and chart system for which dishes are vegan, vegetarian, wheat-free, etc. You can choose noodles made using pure Hokkaido buckwheat, or those blender with imported American. They have both hot and cold dishes.

Contrary to this page's main description, they didn't need advance notice for substitution; both just before and after the afternoon break they changed the fish stock broth to seaweed. They even asked me whether it was too light or strong. I was so pleased I went again on my way back.

Prices ranged from ¥550 (imported basic soba) to around ¥1300 for more complicated dishes (most of which aren't vegan). The bowls are big, but as a tall foreigner I could've done with some more noodles. Menu prices don't include tax!

Pros: Domestic Hokkaido buckwheat soba, Non-smoking seating, Friendly staff

Cons: Limited vegan options, Not the greatest value for portions
