Good and cheap - Edit
If you're eating in, go sit inside to fill out the order card first. Google translate works pretty well on the menu, vegans should avoid the mock meats (often have egg or milk) and anything marked 蛋. They were definitely too busy to handle my foreigner vegan questions, so I just ordered sesame oil noodles and fried tofu. There's chili sauce and soy sauce to add to the flavor.

Beware of eggs, other than that great - Edit
The vegetarian food is awesome. The food here is brilliant and even common for locals to visit. Highly recommended. They have an English menu as well.

Inexpensive but a little bland - Edit
We were pleased to stumble on this place and they had an English menu, which was good. The menu states no egg yet there are egg items on the menu. We ordered egg fried rice - pretty sure it was real egg and not fake egg! Anyway, the noodle dishes and soup were good but a little bland. It was okay for a quick stop.

Didn’t love - Edit
Had the oyster pancake without egg and the sesame noodles. First one was okay but not my fave and the latter I didn’t finish because it had a really strange somewhat burnt/chemical taste/smell that I sometimes encounter in (South) East Asian kitchens. Other dishes might be better

Ordering menu is difficult to understand.
Vendors don't smile or make customers feel welcomed. We hesitate to approach staff to ask if they can omit eggs in our dish and whether there will be changes to the pricing.

Cool veggie spot - Edit
Very little English here but a cheap meal, tasty food and friendly vibes made me come back often. I usually got a soup or noodle dish an extra protein for about 150 yuan.

Nice & tasty, prices are cheap but my portion was a bit small. Will come again, huge menu. There was a English speaking person present as well as a English menu.

Bad Manner - Edit
Since this restaurant sell egg, I just ask politely for vegan fried rice for sure , the owner (female) shout and blame me , rude , surprisingly, the vegan fried rice is more expensive than egg one

Pretty good, lots of vegan options; open early - Edit
The biggest advantage to this place is that it opens fairly early compared to other veg places in the area.
Read moreThey do a variety of rice and noodle dishes, as well as some soups, and an "oyster omelette" that can be made vegan (it's apparently made with seaweed, mushrooms, and sweet potato starch) which is actually pretty good. Prices are not expensive. I found the dry noodles a little salty and the soups a bit bland, but otherwise it makes for a good breakfast. Grab some pan-fried buns from Shang Ding two doors down to really make a solid meal.
Many of the items on the menu contain egg. The menu is entirely in Chinese and nobody speaks English. However, the restaurant is on Uber Eats and dishes there are clearly labeled as vegan or not, so using it for a pickup order or even as a reference when eating in might be a good idea.

Good cheap Taiwan food - Edit
There's an English menu (with titles but no descriptions), or you can ask for a plate of rice and point to the mock meats and veggies you want. The fake spare rib meat is pretty good. Meal costs less than 100NT.

Serves eggs, but a great normal person experience - Edit
Went there because it was labeled "vegan", but turns out they do use eggs -- just not in the menu with English/Japanese. Still, a great typical place where average people in Taiwan seem to eat. The fake goose meat was pretty flavorful. Overall though, the flavor is quite simple, which is not bad but not super interesting ^^;

Culinary highlight of my trip - Edit
Actually, I was looking for restaurant "YouYou" inside the underground mall of Taipei Main Station. It was closed, but someone referred me to Xiū Yuán SùShí. It's easy to find: go up via exit Z8. After a few steps, you can turn right into a smaller street. That's where Xiū Yuán SùShí is located (try to recognize it from the photo's, there's no western writing anywhere).
Read moreXiū Yuán SùShí looks cheap and dirty. People have to share a table. The building and furniture are old and worn out. The open kitchen at the entrance is chaotic. When I entered I got a big laminated English menu and the order (not a friendly request) to go out of the way and sit down. A local offered to help me make a selection. He selected fake fish with steamed rice for me, with Chinese medication soup on the side. Also, he let me taste some of his meals (the soup from the leaves of sweet
potato was very good!).
His selection was the culinary highlight of my trip! You see, before I visited the high class vegan places which offer great food but nothing new. They use familiar ingredients to make meals I can get anywhere in Asia. Xiū Yuán SùShí offers authentic Taiwanese flavor. The soup had mushrooms, roots and fruits in it I never tasted before. The mock fish had a unique taste and even the dressing on the vegetables was unique. Also, sitting with the locals makes eating here a more authentic experience. As an extra special bonus, the food is very cheap.
Pros: authentic Taiwanese taste, cheap, very cheap
Cons: challenging without a local guide, not fully vegan

Good veg option near train station - Edit
If you’ve got a train or high-speed rail to catch or have just alighted and are feeling peckish, Xiuyuan Vegetarian is not a bad place to go for veggie versions of Taiwanese dishes. My dad (who’s a carnivore) enjoyed his “oyster” omelette (ovo-veg), but I didn’t think the broth of the “pork” ball soup had any flavor. I did like the mixed veggie noodle dish. Very affordable, cash only.

Local eatery - Edit
I heard about this place from a friend and went there for breakfast. The staff don’t speak English, but offered us a menu in English which was very helpful.
Read moreWe chose the “seafood” noodle soup, wonton soup and Taiwanese meatballs, all of which were kind of okay. My least favorite was the meatballs, the wontons had a gentle mild taste but the broth for the seafood noodle soup tasted watered down.
Other diners ordered things that looked more delicious than what we had and the menu is long, so perhaps it might be worth trying out other items.

Taiwanese meatball had interesting taste. Wonton soup was good but a bit bland.

Great Taiwanese street food - Edit
Love this place. Love it. Real Taiwanese food in a real Taiwanese environment. The menu and servers don't speak English, but there is a laminated English menu that you can ask for. Not every dish is uniformly good -- I thought the rice noodle dish was dry. I recommend the seafood soup, that was really yummy. Super cheap, too.
Read moreYou may have to work to get the servers' attention. Once I came in and it took me half an hour before I got someone to tell me that they were all sold out and closing.

Not the most polite staff on the planet, but the food was made fresh and quickly. Prices are reasonable and there’s a lengthy menu to choose from. I got the curry noodles, which was a hefty bowl and quite delicious. You do want to watch out for eggs, and they speak limited English.

Favorite restaurant in Taipei! - Edit
This is hands down my favorite restaurant in Taipei. I stumbled upon it on HappyCow and couldn't wait to check it out. Xiu Yuan Su Shi is a small and extremely busy vegetarian restaurant in the heart of Taipei. They have a huge menu in English and most mains are between 40-75 TWD. Try the Traditional Taiwanese Style Sesame Noodles for 45 TWD. I went to Xiu Yuan Su Shi multiple times and this is by far my favorite dish!
