You can tell you're in blue ribbon liberal country

Great coffee, 100pc vegan. Pricey for: Saturday brunch

One coffee, one curry and a roll with tofu scramble cost $60.

Pros: Wholly vegan, Lots of options, Heart warming gingerbread latte

Cons: Bit pricey. plus 10% weekend surcharge plus CC fee

Hit the spot 👌🏽

After years of hearing about Wombat cafe I finally got to dine in here. It was a Tuesday and the vibe was buzzing but there were still plenty of tables.

There was a specials board with 4 items in addition to the standard menu. The food in the cabinet allowed for some menu items to be previewed before being heated which can help with decision making. There was also a hot pie/sausage roll unit next to the counter.

Some of the items are on display in ready to take home option.

I didn’t have to wait to order and the food came out fairly quickly.

I ordered the Not Chicken Roll with mock chicken, slaw, spinach and relish with a very generous side of chipotle mayo.

It was toasted to perfection with crispy outer, full of flavour and a decent amount of mock chicken filling.

For dessert I had the berry crumble slice. The slice tasted a little on the dry side but was still enjoyable.

Pros: 100% plant based, Quick friendly service , Indoor and outdoor seating

Breakfast treat

While on holiday from Perth, I looked up local vegan cafes that were off the highway traveling back to Melbourne from Mornington Peninsula. My expectations for vegan meals is low when I eat out as I'm often disappointed. I don't know what I did right in a past life but I found this gem of a café.

The scrambled tofu is the best I have ever tasted. It smelled and tasted like eggs but without the guilt of any animals being harmed making this dish. Presentation was added to the experience. The pancakes were so yummy. Took me back to my childhood eating my father's pancakes. Those are still the people's champion's of pancakes but this comes a close second. Strawberries and coconut vanilla ice cream are the perfect topping for the stack of pancakes.

The ladies that run this café are so lovely. The service was first rate and I felt at home enjoy this feast and a flat white. I wish that there was a café like this in Perth. They even gave me tips on making scrambled tofu like this at the home.

Pros: Great portion size = Value for money, Delicious meals, Great service

Menu needs a refresh

March 2024
First visit since the cafe changed hands. We ordered the 'not chicken roll' and the burrito from the cabinet as the chalkboard menu featured all the standard fare: nachos, scrambled tofu, pancakes etc, as well as a hot dog which was sold out. The not chicken roll was quite good and full of chunks of mock chicken which made it quite filling, served with a generous smear of chipotle mayo ( hummus might have been a better choice as the roll was already moist and full of flavour). The burrito was very spicy but less tasty and also came with the mayo smear. The drinks, iced chocolate and Raja chai were very good, although the iced chocolate was more ice than anything else; served in a smallish glass, it didn't last long.

I think it may be a while before we make the journey back. Despite having new owners, the menu doesn't feel fresh or exciting.

October 2019
Good value and refreshing salad bowl, a pretty bad Asian soup which neither of us ate much of, and a very good lumberjack cake. The gingerbread latte and mocha were both enjoyable although could have done with more liquid and less froth. The prices have risen considerably since our last visit.

August 2018
We have visited this cafe twice now; not long after it opened two years ago and for the second time last weekend.

The first visit was a little underwhelming and this time I'd have to say not too much has changed. The drinks were quite good but the sausage roll was pretty bad (crumbly tofu stuffed into pastry). The sandwich we ordered was okay but the flavours didn't mix well; possibly melted cheese wasn't needed.

The prices on the other hand are very reasonable and the service was fairly quick. The cafe was doing a roaring trade on the day we visited so they must be keeping the locals happy.

Yes I thought it must have changed hands since I last went there in 2017. It’s like a different cafe.

Solitary Sausage Seeks Fry Friend

As tasty as this hotdog was, it did look very lonely on the plate. Could've used a few chips for company.

Pros: 100% vegan

Cons: EFTPOS surcharge

I think you’ll be hard pressed to find a place without an EFT-POS charge. Most businesses just don’t declare it.

No chips, no salad

4th visit March 2024: New(ish) owners.
The "specials" board is not a board of specials at all, it is the menu, the other options are pre-made, in a glass case, sans prices, waiting to be microwaved. The unspecials were not of interest, so we ordered 2 items from the microwave menu.
The burrito was good, but the spicy sauce was too overpowering, and the smear designed to make the plate look occupied, was a strong mayo, a guacamole would have been a much better idea.
The mock sandwich thingo with the same mayo smear was okay, but neither item was served with even a side salad.
Not a salad in sight, no sign of chips either, which is a very odd omission.

The Raja chai was very good, one of the best I have had, as was the iced chocolate, although the latter clearly disrespecting customers by being predominantly ice (an old trick).
Due to the limited menu, lack of prices, lack of salads and chips, I cannot raise my rating to a 4, but I do believe Wombat has improved, and anyone who realised/admitted that it was sh*t before, may want to give the newer owners a chance.

3rd visit Oct 2019: Fairly small menu and the prices are somewhat high again, but this is partially offset by larger servings and a specials board. The Turkish rolls @ $17.50 & $18.50, the $26 big breakfast and the $19.50 fritters do stand out for the wrong reasons though.
We had mocha and gingerbread latte in mugs, well flavoured but very frothy, leaving not a great deal of liquid in the mugs. The mixed salad bowl @ $15 was large, decent value and mainly very good, but one of the salads overpowered the rest. The Asian style soup $14.50 was very very bad, I had a few spoonfuls and gave up.
The cake was definitely the highlight, although @ $8 for an average sized slice, it needed to be.

2nd visit: most items are fairly cheap, but the menu was far from thrilling, smoothies are small, the food average and the acoustics are deafening. The sausage roll is oddly flavoured scrambled tofu wrapped in pastry.
1st visit: Great to have more options on the Peninsula and Wombat does have potential, the menu (and the servings) could however be larger. I personally found the food to also be lacklustre, hopefully my mind will be changed if I visit again.

All vegan, all tasty

100% plant based cafe, if heading down the Peninsula for the day drive out the back of Dromana for breakfast or lunch. Meals, smoothies and takeaway sandwiches & snacks (protein balls, ‘snickers’ bars etc). Menu is on a board on the wall as meals and ingredients change with what’s fresh/available. We both enjoyed our meals, the rainbow veggie fritters and poké bowl.

Tasty and fabulous

This cafe is a terrific enclave in the middle of an unassuming shopping centre. The food was original with the scrambled tofu sensational. You can also buy vegan cheeses and other foods. A great place

Serving more than roots, shoots and leaves

I hadn’t bothered to come back here for years because our first experience had been so mediocre (possibly not even deserving the three stars I awarded at the time). When another vegan cafe further along the peninsular ended up being unavailable (having not responded to my attempts to book a table, but that’s another story) we ended up coming here. It looked like a completely different cafe from the one we had visited seven years ago (and possibly was). There was a small but varied, dynamic blackboard menu. (By dynamic I mean that when we ordered the last two of one item, they quickly rubbed it out and replaced it with a new one.) Staff, by the way, were friendly and engaging. We ended up sharing the laksa and the smashed avocado. The laksa was delicious, with a tasty, sour broth, at once satisfyingly full-bodied and not overpoweringly intense, so it was a pleasure to finish the remaining soup once the solid ingredients were consumed. The avo was OK but not huge for the price. It had a lovely fresh, herby flavour, enhanced by the lemon wedge, but I might have liked a bit more variety of texture, perhaps with some onion, pumpkin seeds or roasted chickpeas. My companion ordered a smoothie of pineapple, ginger, coconut milk and fresh mint, which I sampled and then insisted on sharing it was so nice. The tart juice, ginger and mint were really refreshing, but it was the coconut creaminess that made it moreish. Wombat is now a quality vegan cafe that is worth visiting.

⭐️⭐️⭐️Great it's here but food not great or cheap
We came here on a road trip on a long weekend, happy to find a vegan cafe that was open. The space was pleasant and a decent size, opening out on to the street. Checking out the menu I was thinking about the tofu scramble until I discovered it was $15 for just tofu and toast and an additional $4 for each side. We ordered the nachos and, as the curry was not available, the samosas. The nachos ($15) lacked flavour, with the beans and tomato not having a 'dippable' consistency, which was unsatisfying. The samosas were not that substantial for $14, with the pastry not particularly fresh in texture and the filling and raita a bit sweet for my taste. I like that this place is here, and that it has a small health food/eco shop, but with the price and the quality of the food as they were, I'd only come back if I was passing through.

Pros: Delicious food, Friendly, engaging staff

Favourite Cafe on the peninsula

One of my favourite all vegan cafe's in Melbourne. Location is only accessible by car as it's in the suburbs of Dromana. Lovely staff, cute and airy atmosphere. The food is filling and tasty. They sell other products to support vegan friendly businesses and also have some lovely vegan artwork on the walls. Recommend eating in or getting takeaway and eating down at Dromana Beach! My go-to is the breakfast tofu burrito!

Pros: Vegan menu, Vegan products, Filling

Great community vibe

Recently visited Wombat Cafe in Dromana, a fully vegan spot with no printed menus, just a large blackboard with a selection of drinks and about 6 menu food items. Tried their popular banana pancakes, homemade falafels, and the hot dawg. The standout was the banana pancakes, and the falafels offered a delightful tasting experience with hummus and pita chips. The staff exuded warmth in the cosy, community-driven atmosphere. However, the Hot Dawg, despite being tasty, felt a bit overpriced at nearly $19 for what was essentially just a Vegie Delights sausage in a bun with sauerkraut, mayo, mustard, and tomato sauce. Despite the pricey Hot Dawg, Wombat Cafe remains a highly recommended vegan gem.

Pros: Friendly Staff, Community like vibe, Unique menu items outside the norm

Cons: Some items are a little over pricey

So much yummy goodness

Loved that everything was vegan. We ate lunch and took some things home. I had the cheese toastie and Greek salad. Both great. My partner had the burrito which he said was good too. We took home a pretzel which was ok. And a Mediterranean baguette which didn’t have much filling I thought. Still a place I would visit again.

I love their banana pancakes. So does my son. They are so thick and fluffy. We had a super lovely chia, banana and peanut smoothie the other day too. I have forgotten the name of it. It was almost like a dessert.
