Possibly the Greatest Dal in Existence

You aren't truly living unless you've enjoyed Wholefoods' $3 dal masterpiece.

There's so much I can say about this phenomenal meal. Portion sizes vary wildly based on what time of day you go and who is serving you. The servers (volunteers) usually give you a weird or confused look when you thank them (maybe they have become jaded from being ignored by unsocial students)? Sometimes there is no chili oil (a true travesty) or salt available.

But frankly, I couldn't care less. Hell for $3 I would still get it if they spat in my food every time they served me (I don't think they do that, thankfully). The other vegan food is excellent too, but $3 dal is at least $10 cheaper than any equivalently portioned meal on campus, and when you are too lazy or busy to make lunch it is the ONLY option even worth considering.

Only recommendation is to order early during peak hour (12-1pm) as it occasionally will take a long time for service; 20+ minutes is not uncommon.

Long live Wholefoods, Viva La Dal!

Vibes and food

Wholefoods kept me going through uni with their supply of coffee, toasties, meals and sweet baked treats. Also where else is there a student veggie café with so many vibes and couches?

Yes, there is room for improvement by cutting out dairy. This is also the only vegetarian place on campus (and dependent on student volunteers), so it is currently the best and most accessible option to students. And yeah, it's good for exposure. This was where I had vegan lasagna for the first time and before I'd even considered a vegetarian diet. Same for when I volunteered in their kitchen.

I do think Wholefoods is worth supporting / not avoiding if you're at Monash.

My favourite place in Monash

Love the people, friendly and nice. Food is cheap and up to level. Baked goods are amazing! For drinks, my favourite is matcha latte, then chai latte

Pros: The friendly casual vibe, Cheap food, Baked goods

Cheapest feed on campus

While the rest of the dishes are 7-9 dollars, the Dahl and rice for 3 is a steal. You won't find a feed any cheaper on campus, and it's both tasty and healthy. Highly recommend. Only downside is that it has limited opening hours due to reliance on volunteers.

Cheap food on campus

It's hard to beat $3 dhal and rice for a poor student meal. It's not the best dhal ever, but at that price, who cares? The other meals, while not fantastic, are still pretty good value. I particularly like the moussaka (not available every day though).

Pros: Cheap, Left-wing hangout, Not-for-profit

Cons: Can be noisy, Not open outside main semester period

Home away from home!

Love this place! Great (warm, filling, tasty) food and drink, and even greater atmosphere. The vegan cakes can be especially amazing, and don't miss the traditional soy chai!
Fair trade organic coffee, no extra for soy... and CHEAP!

Pros: Great vegan food!, Ethical coffee, The best staff

Cons: Can be a bit inconsistent
