3 course lunch

We came for Mother’s Day and had the 3 course lunch for £22.50, this was great value and the food was unreal. We had the mushroom pate, roast and sticky toffee pudding. I can’t describe how good the pudding was. We bought seconds to take away.
The afternoon tea looked very good!
The views are gorgeous and it has a really nice atmosphere. The one downside is the staff seemed quite stressed and it wasn’t the friendliest service as a result I think.

Expensive for portion size

Been here quite a few times now and actually had a couple of the same dishes as previous visits with less food on for the same price (pictures from previous reviews were my reference). Asked for more bread as they gave a tiny piece of bread for the pate and less risotto balls for the same price..bizarre because the portion size was already small to begin with for the price.

Cakes were quite dry as well this time but my partner had Christmas dinner and he said it was good. Cauliflower wings were also tasty as were the risotto balls and pate, just small portions.
Service seemed to improve though and the selection of food is good.

Let Down

Lovely place, very clean and wonderful views from a large glass wall, but it ended there. I was aware it was expensive but I didn't mind if the food was worth it. I'm afraid it wasn't. There was not a lot of it and it was bland. The staff did not look very happy and did not seem to know what gluten was, or weren't bothered. My meal had things in it that were not on the menu including gluten! My wife's meal looked good but again it was rather disappointing.

I think they have a good idea but perhaps the chef was not up to it.

Pros: Wonderful views, Very clean, Outside seating

Cons: Expensive, Bland decor, Bland food

Nice environment but pricey for what it is

We called in for coffee and cake at lunchtime. The setting is really nice with an open view over grassland at one side, although lots of dust is blown up from the car park which is right next to the tables .

Service was great but thought the coffee /cake could have been better quality, particularly considering the price compared to other places.

Pros: Setting , Service, Choice

Cons: Very pricey, Quality did not match price

Lovely setting!

A lovely location with a beautiful view!

Service was a little slow, but they did have a large party in who had pre-ordered and so we were warned of the delay. There were only 2 members of staff working, maybe an extra person would help speed things up a bit!

I chose the Club sandwich which comes with either fries, soup or salad. This was OK, nothing too special. £12.50 for the sandwich was a little pricey too.

All the cakes were vegan too, so when I spotted a Biscoff Cheesecake I had to have it! It was nice enough but I've had better elsewhere.

Service consistently…dire

I go to Whins quite a lot because I’m local and we have few vegan options elsewhere… but literally every single time the service has been dire. We have to gear ourselves up for it and it’s actually become a joke now amongst us and our friends. “How bad was the service today?!🤣” they say when they see on insta we’ve been. “Worse than ever” was my answer today - hence the motivation to leave this review. For the price (very expensive) I would not expect such poor service. I’m so gobsmacked about all the positive reviews - weirdly even some of the 5 star reviews mention the bad service so not sure what’s going on there!
I will list some of the things that have ‘gone wrong’ in our many times there-
*over charged for items we didn’t get
* under charged, missing off items we did get
* being ignored for up to an hour (!)
* being confused for a different group and told someone had paid our bill for us …only to then be told we had to cough up.
* getting there after booking a table
online to find no reservation (happened twice - so never book online now).
* never having the dessert option in that we want
* being told the price for ice cream is however many flavours you want (it’s not - it’s £4 per scoop! That £12 ice cream I got was an expensive dessert!!)
* staff being grumpy with each other in front of customers

And is I mentioned it’s so expensive (usually spend £50 for a lunch for 2) so feels a bit like a kick in the teeth to pay this much for crummy service!
Sort it out Whins - then we can actually enjoy ourselves 🥴

Pros: Vegan options aplenty

Cons: Very poor service , Expensive , Often don’t have things in stock

Lovely Setting

Good food, too. We shared cauliflower wings for starter followed by carrot soup and the Wellington. All delicious. And we had biscoff cheesecake and trillionaires’ tart boxed up to take away. We will be back soon.

Good options, great views

Nice find as it's fully vegetarian, even though some of their signs claim fully vegan which can be misleading so you need to check with staff that everything you order is suitable e.g. state you want plant-based milk / ice cream and make clear you're vegan.

The options were nice and comfy with things like goulash, shepherd's pie and a mushroom and ale pie. The starters we had were wonderful and tasty but the mains were quite standard, I had a lasagne which was quite bland. Good selection of cakes. I know they have just started the new menu so will be coming back to try again once they're more in the swing of things.

Bad service and found a chip of porcelain in scone

Whins was very accommodating when I called to book a table for 6 instead of their 4 people limit on website. Booked for afternoon tea for the first time so was not sure what to expect, especially seen as there was nothing on the website to tell me what was in the afternoon tea selection. On arrival was greeted at the door by a lovely lady who showed us to our table. When seated we had to wait for everyone to arrive and a male waiter was anxious for us to order. When we decided to order, for the finally person, I asked what was in the afternoon tea only to be told that he could not help me ordering food and that he’d take off anything I didn’t want. I realised he didn’t understand my question so again I rephrased the question explaining that I wished to know what would be served on the afternoon platter but again he told me he could not advise if he didn’t know what I want. I assumed this meant there was a choice so I asked “can I choose what is on the selection then?” And he said no. This went back a forth a few times with other questions. In the end we ordered and still didn’t know what to expect. We tried to order drinks but he told us “I don’t do the drinks” and walked off. We finally got table water and some other drinks but no one ever offered or showed us the list of“unlimited tea and coffee” they claim to offer. Still we enjoyed each other’s company and even though the waiter spoke to us oddly it gave us entertainment. For those of you who wish to know what is in the afternoon tea there is a selection of 3 mini sandwiches pesto and tomato, butter and cucumber and chutney with cress. In addition are scones with butter and strawberry jam, strawberries, blueberries and a selection of 3 cakes which were a brownie, lemon cake and carrot and ginger cake. The food was yummy until I got a shock when I took my second bite of my scone and felt a hard chip of something that I could not bite into. When I took it out of my mouth there was a chip from what I think was a porcelain plate. I tried to get someone’s attention but the staff were very busy so I waited until our male waiter was in ear shot to make him aware that I’d found this chip. He offered to replace my scone which I accepted.
We still had a lovely Mother’s Day afternoon which I’m very glad for but I felt I had to tell my experience so this doesn’t happen for others. I hope this review is good enough constructive criticism.

Pros: Yummy food

Cons: Bad service , No menu for afternoon tea

Amazing food and service, an absolute hidden gem!

We tried this little hidden gem out just after Christmas and it was amazing. The service was the best I've ever experienced, even the cook came out to have a chat with us which was nice. And the view is exceptional, green countryside, I didn't even know Chorley had such a lovely part to it! And the food was amazing too, the only downside if I had to pick a fault is that it's not open a little later, but to be fair the portions were that big I was full up for the rest of the night anyway haha! We will 100% be going back here, and looking forward to the next time that we do :).

Pros: Amazing food, Exceptional service, The best views in Chorley

Cons: Closing time could be just 1-2 hours later

Great plant based food in a lovely location

Stopped off here on a trip between South Yorkshire and the Lake District. Conveniently just off of the major motorways north of Manchester area. Parking is slightly limited, we visited when fairly busy and a lot of people appeared to be parked on the side of the road. Car park had a few spaces, so may not really be an issue. The car park is shared with the attached spa I think. Restaurant is very airy and light. With full length glass windows allowing a view over a few rolling hills, very pleasant. I visited when the Christmas Menu was on and it was excellent. A nice range of food and very tasty when it promptly arrived. The starters are quite large in themselves and a couple of these may make up a meal. Service was very good and a wide range of desserts and cakes on show. A very good experience

Pros: Wonderful food, Lovely location, Great service

Best local spot

Best place you’re going to find in the area for vegan food. The location is so beautiful and they’ve got big wide windows you can look out at the scenery from, the outdoor seating must be so lovely in the summer time. Staff were kind too.

Pros: Options that change on a regular basis , Serve a breakfast and lunch menu

Awful quality, poorly executed, rude service

This would be 1 star if it was allowed.
I’ve been here twice, the first time, the food and service were terrible, but I thought I’d return for breakfast as I really didn’t believe you could mess up a breakfast.
I don’t want to write a long review, so I’ll just bullet point it. Overall, it probably the second worst place I’ve been in my life. If you can cook using real ingredients at home, it will be better than this.
•they cannot make coffee and have had no training. They served a flat white with no microfoam.
•the breakfast says served with sourdough. It is just sliced white sandwich bread.
• aubergine bacon is well known to vegans, what they serve here is not this. It is unseasoned, not crisp, with no marinade. It is boiled aubergine slices.
•we waited over an hour for a breakfast, and it arrived cold.
•I don’t rate places that use things from packs - as a former chef, I believe a chef should make things from scratch in house Eg. vegan sausages, hash browns, baked beans.
•scrambled tofu is also well known to vegans. It should be cook led to remove the wetness from silken tofu, it should also be flavoured with kala namak, so it tastes eggy.
•staff are really rude - but I believe this to be the fault of the culture created by the older woman who appears to be in charge. She has no knowledge of food, drink, or dietary requirements. Which is abysmal in a veggie and vegan place. She’s very aggressive, slams down condiments, food, the bill etc. And she will argue blue in the face based on her non existent knowledge of coffee.
•Staff don’t know what is going on, they are disorganised and I feel the very high prices reflect the over staffing due to inefficient training. You cannot just charge extra to cover your disorganisation.
• prices : ‘flat white’ with oat milk £4, vegan breakfast £12.

Having worked as a chef in a highly rated vegan cafe, selling breakfasts made from scratch for £8, I was disgusted. This place misses the mark so badly and if Chorley had any competition, they wouldn’t last a hot minute.

Pros: The location

Cons: Food, Drink , Service

Great totally veggie cafe!

We visited on a Wednesday lunchtime and it was really busy! A lot fancier than I realised with amazing views. A fully mostly vegan menu with some vegetarian breakfast dishes. We were spoilt for choice. I opted for two small plates (not that small!). I had the butternut squash soup and the vegan pizza tart, both delicious. Hubby had the Whin ultimate burger which is actually the Beyond Meat burger with fries and slaw. Also fab. Other dishes weren’t the usual hummus and carrot sticks. They have lots of alcoholic vegan drinks as well, but unfortunately we were driving. The tea and coffee we had were nice.

Pros: All lunch dishes offered as vegan., Amazing views., Tasty food with a good choice of options.

Cons: I had no room for the vegan dessert!

Hidden gem

I found this place just as lockdown was starting so never eaten in, but ordered food for collection a few times, they do a Sunday dinner menu, £15 for a main and dessert, options change every week, the menu is posted on facebook and orders taken for collection. Food is hot ready to eat, tonight we had katsu curry and pecan pie with ice cream for pudding. Last week we had vegan wellington roast dinner with red wine gravy, I had berry crumble with custard, my partner - carrot cake. All food we've had was amazing. Menu is clearly marked with vegan/vegeterian/gluten free options, there's always a choice of three mains and 2-3 desserts. Can definitely recommend and we will be ordering again, and visiting when they are allowed to reopen.

Pros: Menu clearly marked vegan/vegetarian, Very good value for money, Very tasty food.

Cons: Can't fault them.

A diamond in the rough! 💎

We’re so happy we found this amazing little restaurant. We were told the views were breathtaking and the food superb, so we set off to see what the fuss was about. The boys, who are not vegan, had the Whins burger and Jude’s ice cream for afters. They couldn’t believe how good it was and have since been back again. I had the Buddha bowl and my brother the Wellington with red wine gravy. We were blown away with the the depth of flavours in the dishes. Well done to David and Lesley (who is an amazing host) for coming up with the concept of this restaurant. There’s nothing quite like this that I’ve been to, especially around this area. It truly is a diamond in the rough. By the look of the rest of the food coming out of the kitchen, this place will be here for a long time...fingers crossed 🤞

Pros: Majority of food is vegan, Great flavours in all the dishes, Vegan beers and wine

Cons: 🤔

Lovely location, friendly staff & fantastic food!

Beautiful location with both inside and outside seating. We took our dog who is quite shy around others (dogs and people) and the staff were lovely and accommodating, getting water for him and stopping to chat with us. Food was great with both snacky/lunch options and more hearty meals too! Vegan ice cream station outside which is perfect if you don't want to come in the resteraunt! Nice modern feel outside which makes it more of a resteraunt feel which is sometimes lost with 'Hippy-style' vegan cafes. Highly recommend.

Made a trip from Preston, worth it!

Recently moved up north and was spoilt for choices when living in London. HappyCow is a god sent! Discovered this place accidentally and really wanted to go out after horrid lockdown months. Good food, amazing choices and nice staff. The place is well set out too. I could moan about the prices, but it’s difficult time for everyone. So if you can afford it, go for it.

Pros: Vegan choices, Good spot, Nice staff

Cons: Slightly pricey

Amazing little gem!

We was told about this little restaurant from a friend, and I just couldn’t wait to try! We rocked up this morning and we was instantly blown away by the views from sitting outside! We got good weather and had coffees whilst the food cooked. And honestly it was the best breakfast ever! Everything I had was vegan! It’s was simply the best, vegan black pudding, bacon, sausage, baked beans, tofu scrambled egg! I could have had two lots. And the the breakfast was 9.00 well worth it! Definitely would recommend, and even if your not vegan you should try you will not be disappointed! A very high standard and fresh little restaurant! The people who run it are also very warm and welcoming! Be back soon!

Pros: The views outside are amazing! , All vegan/veg options! , Moderate food prices
