Incredible bread, but that's it

This is a good place to go if you want good bread. Not much else. And for me, that's enough. I recommend the rosemary loaf and the baguettes, best bread I've had in my life.

Pros: Amazing fresh bread

Cons: Few vegan options

Great bread, not super for vegan anything else

I love their bread, so it wasn't too disappointing that my breakfast there was a soy latte and some bread, but I wasn't in any great hurry to go back. Vegan options are pretty limited.

Cons: Not much for vegans

Delicious bread but disappointing for vegans

I love Wheatfields bread, but I would not call the cafe vegan-friendly. If you come here for breakfast, your options are dry toast, hash browns, and fruit. There is also a vegan ginger cookie, and soymilk is available for espresso drinks. We were told the peanut butter and jelly sandwich isn't available before lunch, which seemed silly. Other vegan lunch options are a salad or sandwich with animal products removed. Sandwich toppings and condiments are pretty dairy-centric, including on the tempeh reuben. One designated vegan sandwich (other than pb&j) and a tofu scramble would make a huge difference. As it is, I wouldn't recommend eating here if you're vegan.

Pros: Delicious bread, Soymilk for espresso drinks , Lacto-ovo friendly

Cons: Not vegan-friendly

one of the best spots in Lawrence!

If you're in for lunch the vegan options may look slim, but their house salad is hands-down my favorite vegan lunch downtown. It's pretty filling since it comes with a couple salads on top and two slices of bread. I recommend the poppyseed dressing if you eat honey, but the balsamic is also excellent.

Highlight of my Lawrence Trip

This is a vegetarian-friendly cafe and bakery in the lively Lawrence area next to Kansas University. Don't be fooled by the stair/doors shown in the front picture; that's the end of the building. There are two doors facing the other street that are the real entrance. This is a cafe--not a restaurant--order at the counter and eat there or to go. The food was excellent, but as it was 90 degrees out, didn't try the coffee.

The staff was friendly/efficient, it was pretty busy on the weekend when I was there. The entree took longer than I expected, but I spent that time looking over the desserts/breads.

There are separate counters for the bakery which had a diverse selection of homemade breads like Raisin Pecan and decadent desserts like the marvelous Opera Cake. You can buy selections or the whole loaf/cake. There were vegan cookies, too.

The menu is online and is kept up to date. No straight vegan dishes--you'd have to request the cheese left off. I've had the Yamwich, which I like to get since I can't get anything like it other places. The opera cake was so good, I had to force myself to slow down when eating it. It has coffee layers like tiramisu but I didn't taste them. The flavor came together perfectly.

If you live in the area, you've probably been here. Otherwise, it's worth it for a day trip along with shopping and taking the nearby river walk.

Pros: Excellent Food, Good Value, Bakery

Cons: Crowded, limited straight vegan options
