Delicious and unique experience - Edit
Once you enter the garden of Shan's beach house you find yourself in a tranquile and secluded place despite being next to the road. The dishes he offered that day were traditionally prepared with interesting herbs but not spicy [good!] - I found the taste quite enjoyable and well-balanced. The coconut rotti was amazing!
Read moreEverything's without wheat flour, i.e. gluten-free and Shan can be trusted for his cooking knowledge passed from generations. He even makes the coconut milk on his own!
Be sure to contact Shan well before your intended stay as he is not immediately available, to make sure he doesn't have cooking classes or other professional obligations.
Pros: Unique and well-balanced dishes, Tranquile atmosphere, Personal contact and conversations

This cooking class was the best experience we had during our travels and the best food we tried! I cannot recommend enough!

Very delicious authentic Sri Lankan food. - Edit
We found this place through Happy Cow and decided to come here for lunch.
Read moreThe dishes were 1800 Rupee per person which comes with two coconut roti.
We had a Dal and a pumpkin curry and it was very tasty.
When we found out the owner offers cooking classes we decided to do one the next day.
Unfortunately there was a miscommunication when I asked for the price, as I asked how much it is and I remember he said 8000 Rupee altogether.
The following day he said then it’s 8000 Rupee (25€) per person.
We enjoyed the experience but for that price we wouldn’t have done it.
The owner is very nice, but it lowered our overall experience!
Pros: Very delicious food , Kind owner , All vegan
Cons: Cooking class very pricey.

Would reccomend 100% - Edit
I cannot speak highly enough about this place! Our lovely host welcomed us into his beautiful home and cooked gorgeous food for five of us. All of the herbs and vegetables were grown in his garden and the food was just delicious. He was super kind and friendly, as well as passionate about animal rights and his family. We didn’t have the chance to do the cooking class but would have loved to. A truly divine dining experience.

cooking class recommendable - Edit
I went there for the cooking class. Arranged it via whatsapp very spontaneous two hours before it started.
Read moreAnd it turned out i was lucky, as there was no one else in the class than me (the next day was already fully booked).
We cooked together, I could ask questions, he explained what he did and for what healthy possibilities the different spices can be used for.
Some ingredients were out of the own garden.
What i found a little bit „not so good“, was that the recipes haven’t been included in the course (that was already quite pricey / European-price-ish). So recipes must be purchased on an extra cost for another 8k rupees.
Food was very delicious and as i asked for a huge portion, I got a huge portion. Didn’t expect to eat alone, so it was more food than expected. But ate it all because very good! We cooked Rotis, Dal with spinach and fresh coconut sambal.

We did an Ayurvedic cooking class here and it was amazing. Nearly all ingredients from the chefs garden, who also foraged mushrooms and was super vegan activist! Was a bit expensive but all goes to local small business so it’s worth it.

Most amazing vegan spot on south coast! - Edit
Shan’s vegan restaurant is out of this world. We have lived next door to Shan for the last 7 months and my life has actually changed because of Shan’s food. He cooks everything from scratch ... even his coconut milk is made from scratch! His dishes are unique but have a beautiful Sri Lankan flare. Shan instantly becomes your friend when you eat at his place and every meal comes with a beautiful cup of tea (which you can also purchase his tea spices). He accommodates big groups as well if you book before which we have taken so many friends and family. Shan is an incredible Sri Lankan man who was taught by his grandmother how to cook Ayurvedic/vegan food. I can’t recommend this place enough! Our favorite is his vegan pizza and rice and curry but his jackfruit wrap (pictured here) is out of this world (not always in season though).

Very local but expensive - Edit
Nice staff, kinda liked the local garden style exterior, food like food - was interesting to try. The bad - For simple salad, small coco soup and some pita style coco bread with coco souce 5000 local money. Ok I can agree with price at some point but then please serve at least on a clean dishes so customers can have a feeling that it’s something special.

Inspiring cooking class at Shan's - Edit
Shan, the host, has made this cooking class the best experience in Sri Lanka. I'm going to stay in a posh hotel on the west coast next week, but there I will probably not be able to have a peek in the kitchen and learn from the chef. Not only about cooking, ingredients, spices, but also about food and the effect on our health.
Read moreI had a private class (as no one else had booked the class tonight) and I enjoyed every minute of it. We cooked a pumpkin curry with beet root salad and a coco sambol. For dessert I had a coconut pineapple raw cake. It was all delicious and off course all vegan and organic.
If you are planning to go to the cooking class, be aware it's not going to be cheap. The prices on the regular menu might give you an indication. For me it was worth every rupee, as I'll be taking new cooking inspiration home with me. Cooking classes are available for lunch and dinner.
Pros: Great host, Completely vegan and organic
Cons: Expensive (but for me it was worth it).
