Good - Edit

My husband and I had lunch here in April 2018. The venue is super cute and the service was good. Some items from the menu was missing which was a little disappointing but the food we tried (jackfruit peta bread thing & savoury Dutch pancakes, vegan options) were delicious.

Cons: Portion sizes could be bigger

Modification - Edit

We came here for lunch and it was a pleasant setting. l had a delicious berry smoothie to start, garnished with mint. We ordered the (vegan version of the) shoarma and the vegan burger. The coconut-based garlic sauce for the shoarma turned into a thin liquid, which dripped out of the bread, but the sandwich did taste quite nice. The burger (of which we were advised the vegan patty was different from the vegetarian), while not bad, was a little dry and unexciting, with a sense of something missing/removed. The fries were nice though. It was clear that the focus of this place was ovo-lacto-vegetarians. Most of the vegan dishes were modified versions. The owners were talking about the necessity to cater to vegans, so hopefully this area will develop.

Pros: Delicious smoothie, Tasty shoarma

Cons: Dry burger , Drippy garlic sauce

They made a vegan burger for my daughter, even though it was not on the menu. It was delicious ! I would definitely recommend this cafe, and come back :-)

All a bit strange - Edit

Very cute setting, a lovely renovated cottage. But it all went downhill after that. It was like walking into someone's house who wasn't expecting visitors. I couldn't work out who was staff and who were diners. Apparently they were just back from a break, but holiday mode seemed a bit too prevalent. The cabinet was empty and the promises of made-to-order vegan options were not followed up. We ordered pancakes, which turned out to be one pancake that took 20 minutes to make. All a bit too disorganised for my liking.

Friendly, warm, lovely - Edit

The staff here are unbelievably friendly, I was greeted with warm smiles and polite conversation. The vegan options are easy to identify, although some are stored/displayed very close to the non-vegan items, such as the cheese-containing foods (the reason I knocked off a star). I chose the raw jaffa cake and it was so tasty, although a bit too rich for me. The coffee here is also great.

Lots of options for veggies and vegans alike and a wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Pros: Lovely atmosphere and staff, Great options, Great coffee

Cons: Potential contamination of vegan food with dairy

cute cafe ! - Edit

The Villa 23 cafe is a beautifully renovated house in Riccarton. There is on-street parking available and also spaces in front of the cafe.

There is freshly made cabinet food and also a board menu. The food is crafted from fresh, organic fruit and vegetables, sourced from the Riccarton farmers market. Villa 23 has very delicious vegetarian food, with a growing number a vegan options too. I ordered the falafel bowl, served with fresh greens, roasted veges, home-made hummus and dukkah! Great coffee and friendly service! I definitely will be going back!!

Whether you are vegetarian or not, I highly recommend this cafe for everyone :)

Stylish cafe - Edit

Villa 23 is a beautifully done up renovated house in the industrial part of Riccarton near Blenheim Rd. There is parking in front and on the street but we parked in the car park behind a neighbouring building.

The place was quite busy at lunchtime. They have cabinet food plus a menu on the wall board. The menu is very dominated by dairy and eggs. There are some nice vegan options though nothing stand out. I think lacto ovo vegetarians will enjoy the food more and it really is set up for them very well.

We ordered satay veges and a burger which was served with bread as the bun wasn't vegan. What we ordered was very good and beautifully presented.
The staff were super helpful and accommodating to us as vegans. Unfortunately there weren't any vegan baking or desserts. That was very disappointing. They do offer three plant milks though. The dressing had honey so wasn't vegan and there was no vegan aioli or mayonnaise.

I did like Villa 23 a lot. I hope they can make a few changes to make it properly vegan friendly. It's not hard to offer vegan dressings and baking so hopefully they can take this on board.

Pros: stylish building, helpful staff, nice food

Cons: no vegan baking, no vegan dressings, no vegan burger buns
