UPDATED: no longer some of the best Vietnamese food in London

My boyfriend and I have become regulars here because we’re local and it’s just that good!! They were takeaway only during the pandemic when we first tried them and it was a staple lazy choice for us, since they’ve opened up to eat in customers we go at least every couple of months, maybe more! The vegan spring rolls are the best I’ve ever had. Anything vegan on the menu we have tried and tested and we can’t fault it - options and allergens are clearly labelled and on a separate part of the menu. The staff are super friendly, it’s a walk in place and you can usually get a table, otherwise you’ll just wait a couple of mins. Really good value for what you get with quick service. Huge portions of pho, always leave super full! You can ask for minor customisations and they’ve always accommodated. We love it here and will continue coming back for a long time!

Update July 2023:
They have had to change their business model likely due to financial issues. Now more of a canteen/lunch stop than a formal restaurant. No longer serve pho. Still have plenty of vegan options but has a totally different feel to it - quite clinical rather than the warm atmosphere it had before, and isn’t somewhere I’ll be frequenting anymore which is sad.

Amazing 🔥🌶️🥢😋 could have 5 ⭐

👨🏽‍🍳 Servicio 10/10
The waitress was so sweet and nice, and very fast as well!

🧆 Comida 10/10
Very tasty, big portions, a lot of sauces on the table if you want some more chilli!
The sauce with the summer roll was delicious and the spicy tofu is so good!
The pineapple drink was refreshing, a bit too much sugar tho for my personal taste.

💒 Ambiente 8/10
Nice little restaurant.

Excellent Takeaway

A friend and I ordered from Viet Anh Pho, and I was so pleased with the range of vegan food available! I went with Com Ga Nuong Chay (Vegan Grilled Chick'N' & Rice) and it was incredible! Delicate flavour, and it travelled well. I’ll definitely be visiting Viet Anh Pho in person to try more of the menu.

Fantastic 'pho' meats

Stopping here on a whim around lunchtime (a cute letterboard sign outside reads 'vegan friendly uWu ♥'), I was pleasantly surprised by the wide use of vegan meats on the menu. With the choice of vegan 'fish', 'chicken' or 'pork' rice dishes, it was clear that this restaurant does not simply rely on tofu and mushrooms for their veggie offerings.

The interior is small and chic. The walls are painted black, Edison bulbs dangle from the ceiling, and looming plants adorn the counter. There is no front-of-house, so you can either plop yourself down at a table and wait for a server or order straight at the till.

I decided to order spring rolls and pho at the counter and made myself comfortable by the window. Within ten minutes, a bowl of spring rolls arrived accompanied by cucumber, pickled carrots, and wrapper-sized cuts of lettuce. I was slightly disappointed that the spring rolls were made with wheat wrappers instead of the traditional rice paper. This meant that although still deliciously crispy, they missed the rugged texture characteristic of rice paper. However, the filling was substantial and savoury, consisting of vegan chicken and the usual suspects (mung bean noodles, carrots, wood ear fungus etc.). The dipping sauce was light and vinegary, balancing the umami of the spring rolls. Overall, a solid starter.

The vegan pho really impressed me. The soup was savoury, aromatic and delicately sweet. A smattering of well-fried tofu and vegan meats (imitating chicken and Vietnamese ham) completed the bowl of warming ambrosia. The herb garnish was simple, but I liked how they went with scotch bonnets for the chillis (a nod to the coexisting Caribbean community, perhaps?). Needless to say, I left the bowl completely spotless.

Verdict: utterly satisfying. With Deptford having one of the highest Vietnamese populations in the UK, I am pleased there is finally a place here I can rely on for delicious vegan pho. Seeing as this is in my neck of the woods, I will be sure to come back often to try out everything they have on their vegan menu!

Pros: Lots of vegan dishes to try, Meaty vegan meats, Vegan pho stock is delicious

Cons: No hot drinks
