Serves meat, vegan options available. A colorful, casual Cuban food restaurant. Labels the handful of veg/vegan possible items. Removed Mar 2021 - no longer vegan-friendly.
Super casual escape from frigid weather with a quirky retro Cuban vibe. I've had breakfast there several dozen times since they opened and I've yet to have a single bad experience. Wait staff has always been helpful, pretension-free, friendly and attentive. Solid menu options for lacto-ovo vegetarians - eggs, black beans, crispy yucca frita with mojo sauce, fried plantains, huge pancakes (I suggest mango pancakes and opt for extra puree in lieu of syrup), guava jelly on toast, creole sauce (order extra), and wonderful cafe con leche. I've only eaten breakfast there so I can't speak for the rest, but the portions are appropriate and the prices are more than reasonable. It's not without flaws, such as a single tiny restroom and somewhat limited and petite seating. The flaws add to the charm in my opinion, however it can get cramped at times which I could see it being cumbersome for larger folks or larger groups. (I noticed they've added outdoor seating, so that probably helps during busier summer hours.) Generally speaking, expect longer wait times during rush hours - particularly on weekend days. (Probably partly due to the fact that the atmosphere is so nice that it kind of makes you want to linger.) Regardless, I highly recommend checking it out and I'd give it 5 stars but the app won't let me. (Assuming because it's not vegan.) The cafe would be hard to spot without its big colorful mural. It's in a quiet and mostly residential neighborhood, conveniently located at an intersection near 35W, and has ample free on-street parking in all directions.
First off, this restaurant has a warm and casual ambiance. I got the chips appetizer (which is vegan even though the menu says vegetarian, the waitress to checked with the head chef) and the vegetarian plate. It was all so good! If you like plantains, creole, or just want to try something completely unique, I highly recommend this place.
