New Vegan Menu - Edit
Velasco's North of the Border has always had a few vegetarian/vegan compatible options on the menu. To my pleasant surprise they now have a vegan menu with many options. I ordered a yummy burrito with sweet potato, peppers, avocado, black beans and seasoned rice. Next visit I had a taco with vegan chorizo and black beans, and a tostada with a spiced lentil and cauliflower filling. Everything was very tasty. There are more menu items that I look forward to trying.
Read moreIt is great to have more options than a "veggie burrito no sour cream no cheese" type of experience.
They also have excellent chips and salsa, great aguas frescas, and a vegan cashew cheese.
The setting is pleasant on a pretty down town street, and the service is above average.
I highly recommend paying them a visit.
Pros: Vegan Menu, Great Location, Great Food

Good Food, Terrible Service - Edit
They have a fantastic "Rancher's Salad" (order without cheese). It has cabbage and jicama and cilantro and radish and all of those really fresh crisp foods you often miss out on at Mexican restaurants.
Read moreMy husband loves the avocado tostado.
However, they are always understaffed. We go in and there is one server during a busy time. It's so frustrating. We try to ignore it (I love that salad!) but then the owner walks around to chat with all the customers she knows. Meanwhile we have been out of waters and salsa for 20 minutes and trying to get our check. It happens every time.
Pros: the salad!, avocado tostado, location
Cons: understaffed , bad service, the smell of seafood can be really overwhelming (l

Not the best taqueria in Petaluma - Edit
Pretty bland for Mexican food. Mi Pueblo is right up the street and much tastier (beans are lard-free as well, they have cactus tacos and vegetarian burritos, and they understand "no cheese" and "no sour cream" requests--they also have an entire "healthy style" section with no meat/dairy).

Sooooo Good! - Edit
Velasco's North of the Border is one of Petaluma's gems. It's open and airy, with lots of windows looking out onto busy Washington Street and quaint Kentucky Street. It's a comfortable place to dine and relax with family and friends. Teri, the owner of Velasco's, is delightful, and you will find her at the restaurant more often than not. There is something on the menu for everyone -- meat, fish, vegetarian, and vegan options -- so everyone in your party will be happy. Their Spanish rice is delicious...and it's vegan! When I was there last week, vegan tamales were one of the specials of the day. They were sooooo good, as good as the veggie burrito (ordered with no cheese or sour cream makes it vegan) that has been my favorite for years. Their veggie burritos have chunks of potato inside. Yum! Their iced tea is another favorite of mine. Oh, and the restaurant has a bar, so you can order a Margarita or other drink to go with your meal. There's everything to love here, so give Velasco's a try the next time you're in downtown Petaluma. Enjoy!
