OK, though not too healthy, and seems a bit overpriced

Simple flavorful fare, but not as economical as expected: the portions are like side orders, even though the prices are like main dishes. Actually I don't normally pay much attention to prices locally, because they are generally lower than in neighboring countries. But while Velan's prices are certainly not exorbitant, they are noticeably higher than similar fare at other local venues - though food is not noticeably better.

But my main problem here is finding a dish that's not too unhealthy: if I can find a dish here that's not fried, then it's usually too salty.

There is a sister restaurant, Velan Kitchen. As far as I can tell, the menu and food is the same. But Velan "Express" has only one person acting as cashier/cook/server, so service is even slower that Velan Kitchen's slow service.

To be clear, although this review may seem negative, it is not a bad place to eat. If health were not a concern (or the food was especially tasty - it's not), I probably would not have paid much attention to the price and slow service and rated it higher. But even though this eatery was a mere 20 minute walk from the hotel, after two visits I had no desire to return and instead took long bus rides to other spots.

Good vegan food in a simple environment

Was just "in the neighborhood" and thought to check if this place was really closed or not - it's open. It took a small amount of looking but it's not too hard to find. Have to go past the outdoor food stalls to the inside where this vegan food stall is. You order your food and sit inside to eat.

There is not much English spoken here so speak Indonesian or bring a translation app. But also everyone was super nice and the cashier lady was able to speak a little with English and helped us figure things out.

We ordered 2 dishes:
- the Geprek complit, a dish of 4 fried things (tofu skin as "chickn", tofu, mushroom, and tempeh) with a spicy samba on the side. It was tasty, but a lot of fried food
- the Nasi pecel, a rice dish with green beans, bean sprouts, and leafy greens under a peanut sauce. This was really good.

Everything was simple but clean. Service was very good and friendly.

Pros: Simple, tasty food, Service was good and people were friendly

Cons: Be careful if you don't want a lot of fried food
