Delicious and Atmospheric - Edit
I had a wonderful dinner at Vegie Bar last night. Even though it was a weekend and the place was packed our wait for a table was very short and well organized - we were given a table marker then sent off to wait in the courtyard, where we admired the murals.
Read moreI ordered a house salad with a samosa and, from the specials menu, a small fresh and tangy pizza. Both were absolutely delicious, and the dim lighting added to the mystery of my salad - I couldn't see what was on my plate very well ( and I have 20 20 eyesight) so I just dipped my fork in and enjoyed the element of surprise. It was a complex salad with different regions having different dressings and some vegetables cooked and others raw. So yummy! My pizza was a delight too - the fought was just the right balance between light, chewy and crispy and the toppings worked beautifully with each other, none drowning out the other, so each bite was a nice blend of feta, tomato, onion, mint and lemon.
I'm definitely coming back here to eat during my stay in Melbourne! One thing to pay attention to here is that the portions are large and by Melbourne law you are not allowed to take leftovers home with you, so it is important not to order more than you can eat at one sitting.
Pros: Amazing food, Wonderfully diverse menu, Great atmosphere
Cons: Lights so dim I couldn't see my food, But honestly, I didn't really mind

Good food! Even better if they could ditch dairy - Edit
Really yummy food and big portions! They're about 90% vegan which is great. It would be even better if they could ditch the dairy completely 🌱🙏

Delish - Edit
Dayum this place has really stood the test of time for vegos - I would come here all the time in high school and over a decade on and it’s still bustling! The food was great, so many options and can’t complain. Personal fave was the gnocchi and the mushroom pizza. GF options are great, but I definitely prefer the non-GF pizza base. Keen to go again!

Great place! - Edit
This place has so many options! I went with the greens plate & it lacked a little flavour but the rest of the food looked really good! A little pricey but worth it overall!

Good options! Lots of variety - Edit
We had a special dish: HSP. The kebab meat was very tasty. The spices weren't quite the same but still delicious, highly recommended! We also had the yaki udon which was good. And the king oyster mushrooms which was very tasty, great texture and flavour.

Yeah they seriously need to go vegan. There’s not even a commercial justification for not doing so, even if I thought that were valid. They made the move of having their menu vegan standard (except for honey in a cocktail, which I’m sure they couldn’t live without) and then went backwards by introducing a halloumi burger. I’m sure the customers would have left in droves if they hadn’t. In short, they don’t care about veganism except to profit from a vegan clientele.

so vegetarians don't deserve a place to eat? Sometimes changes can be small and incremental. Some people are not ready to go vegan yet. Can both co-exist? Yet again the vegan police is in full force. Don't eat there if you have problem with it. Quit shaming them.

@otherdimension I feel like I’m reading the op eds in the Herald Sun when I read your comments. The beauty of vegan food is that it doesn’t ethically preclude anybody from eating it. Are you sure you’re not a plant from the animal cruelty industry?

Lovely Ambience + Lovely Food = Lovely Combo - Edit
I’m thankful to my younger brother’s girlfriend for recommending Vegie Bar (along with Girls And Boys) in Fitzroy. Enjoyed the relaxing ambience, the nice service, golden chai lattes (pictured), gyozas, spring rolls and the pizza with the kale topping. Though I think the vegan cheese layer on the pizza could use a little more generosity to add the cheesiness and balance out the tartness of the kale and olives. I also wish that Vegie Bar can have a full vegan menu instead of offering a few non-vegan options like dairy on their menu as the non-vegan options are just unnecessary. In fact, I think Vegie Bar has the potential to go vegan as a similar business in Malaysia called The Hungry Tapir has made the move recently. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and definitely worth recommending to others who are in town.

Cons: Not vegan although they can easily be vegan

I absolutely agree that it’s unnecessary for them to serve the non-vegan dishes. It reflects that this is a business that serves vegan food to profit from a particular market, rather than because they care at all about veganism, or even vegetarianism for that matter. The owners also own Rice Queen, which serves murdered animal flesh.

Solid menu - Edit
A good variety in the menu. Delicious food. Able to order online via a QR code or the more traditional through the menu and a person route.
Read moreSome things are still vegetarian so this place is not all plant based, but the menu is well labelled.
The con was the prices, it is pricey and sadly the flavours aren't mind blowing which would justify the price.

Decent feed - Edit
It's nice going to a restaurant and having the whole menu to choose from. Food is decent, but the vibe is a little grunge for me. Very typical of that area and demographic. I'd still happily eat there though. Maybe I just prefer a more formal dining experience... or maybe I'm getting old.

Great food and vibes! - Edit
Loved this place. Delicious food and huge servings for a very good price.
Read moreOur favorites were the vegan chicken bao, the p king vegan duck wrap and the laksa. Also the raspberry tart was very very nice! 😋
The only reason I give them a 4 star rating is because they are not fully vegan and they serve animal products. All the dishes are vegan by default but you can add cheese/diary options. Hopefully soon they go fully vegan! 🤞🏻
Btw we went for lunch and then on the same day we went back for dinner. That’s how much I loved it! 💚 100% recommended!

Delicious! - Edit
There are so many vegan options in Melbourne that it was not easy to pick where to go on our short trip, but we decided to kick it off at Vegie Bar!
Read moreWe ordered the pad thai, mee goreng, and fries with chipotle aioli. While I found the pad thai just a tad too sour for my liking, the mee goreng was phenomenal! The fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and soft and delicious on the inside - a really generous serving as well!
The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was amazing!

Great food, shame they still use dairy - Edit
When I first moved to Melbourne everyone told me Vegie Bar was the old standby. I did like the food and vibe, but when they accidentally gave me dairy sour cream one time I was a bit turned off. Recently I've been coming back, and while it's a shame they aren't all vegan (everything is vegan by default but you can ask for dairy) I do think they have a good range. The desserts, from all-vegan Girls and Boys next door - are to die for - I am in love with the Lemon Tart!

I never went back after they gave me dairy in a 'vegan' dish, that I had confirmed was vegan while ordering.
