never go back - Edit
Sat at a community table with a person I know and 2 of her friends. Went up to pay at the end of the meal and they decided no splitting bills for the evening because it's busy. I explained I have no cash, she asked if I wanted to talk to the manager. The manager kept interrupting me and said too busy to split bills. I explained all the time wasted she could have split the bill already. Also, if they are going to change the rules for the evening, they need to tell upon ordering to give us options. She just gave me a look. Luckily the rest of my party had cash and gave me their money and I paid on card. I have eaten here many times and never had them pull this crap.
Read moreFood made me sick all night and the next day.
Found out they are owned by meat eaters. Do not want to support meat eaters exploiting vegans and vegetarians either.
Can't take your leftovers, mostly rude staff, snobs like they are the only place to eat in the whole country!
I will never eat here again. Madame K, Yongs and Lord of the Fries are within 2 mins walking distance anyway.
Pros: decent size serves
Cons: owned by meat eaters, music too loud, didn't split bill

All cuisines, somehow still delicious! - Edit
I’ve been coming here for the last 3 years, ever since moving to Melbourne in 2021 pretty much and I’m only just getting around to writing one of these. Absolutely awesome menu, just as much vegan if not more than vegetarian option. During our most recent visit we dined italian and got the Bianca pizza and the lasagna and holy sh**, the lasagna was amazing. Such a generous portion, came out still sizzling, and paired amazingly with a red wine. Pizza was also dope but that vegan lasagna is such a massive highlight, can’t believe I’ve never had it before.
Read moreApart from the amazing food, the service is incredible. The only thing I dislike is the push for table service over using the QR codes (which do work) on the table, which seems contradictory to my amazing service comment, but sometimes I just wanna browse a menu and order when I’m ready, ya know? Especially on a menu as extensive as Vegie bars where it’s gonna take us a hot minute to decide everything we want.
Definitely doesn’t lose points for this though, and I’m sure the business makes more cash leaving the QR code system out of the equation, so I can understand why it’s done.
Pros: Vegan lasagna , Staff service, Bianca pizza
Cons: Push for floor service over QR codes

Coming from interstate, we had this venue marked as one to visit, super glad we did 👍
It’s an icon in Melbourne, and you can see why it’s been running for sooo long.
Enjoyed the superb sweeties - lemon meringue pie & Brownie with caramel sauce & a scoop of thier homemade icecream - OMG … to die for ‼️

Plenty of vegan options - Edit
Love love love this place. Food a little on the pricier side so it’s definitely a treat for us! Only thing to keep in mind is that they do serve dairy milk, so if you want a coffee or hot drink make sure you say soy/oat etc!! Meals are vegetarian or vegan so make sure to check the menu carefully!! Yaki udon is really nice, but I always kinda want more mock duck bc it is good :P

Unfortunately I don’t consider Vegie Bar to be a friend to animals. It is a successful restaurant operating since the 90s in the heart of Fitzroy and it still profits from animal abuse. It actually introduced a halloumi burger to its menu last year, demonstrating no intention to move away from this.

Good gnocchi 😍 - Edit
Still good! Serving sizes are great — no stress that you’re going to be hungry after. Went with a group & all were very happy & satisfied with flavour. Outdoor seating has QR code ordering to the table too for those Covid-safer vibes.

Good food! Even better if they could ditch dairy - Edit
Really yummy food and big portions! They're about 90% vegan which is great. It would be even better if they could ditch the dairy completely 🌱🙏

Delish - Edit
Dayum this place has really stood the test of time for vegos - I would come here all the time in high school and over a decade on and it’s still bustling! The food was great, so many options and can’t complain. Personal fave was the gnocchi and the mushroom pizza. GF options are great, but I definitely prefer the non-GF pizza base. Keen to go again!

We had a special dish: HSP. The kebab meat was very tasty. The spices weren't quite the same but still delicious, highly recommended! We also had the yaki udon which was good. And the king oyster mushrooms which was very tasty, great texture and flavour.

Yeah they seriously need to go vegan. There’s not even a commercial justification for not doing so, even if I thought that were valid. They made the move of having their menu vegan standard (except for honey in a cocktail, which I’m sure they couldn’t live without) and then went backwards by introducing a halloumi burger. I’m sure the customers would have left in droves if they hadn’t. In short, they don’t care about veganism except to profit from a vegan clientele.

so vegetarians don't deserve a place to eat? Sometimes changes can be small and incremental. Some people are not ready to go vegan yet. Can both co-exist? Yet again the vegan police is in full force. Don't eat there if you have problem with it. Quit shaming them.

@otherdimension I feel like I’m reading the op eds in the Herald Sun when I read your comments. The beauty of vegan food is that it doesn’t ethically preclude anybody from eating it. Are you sure you’re not a plant from the animal cruelty industry?

Nope!😄I just don't want this space to become elitist and shaming.

Is there any reason why vegetarians cannot eat vegan food? Is there a reason why they need animal exploitation, and cruelty in their diet? Your comment "so vegetarians don't deserve a place to eat?" is very militant vegetarian, ironic, and completely illogical.

Lovely Ambience + Lovely Food = Lovely Combo - Edit
I’m thankful to my younger brother’s girlfriend for recommending Vegie Bar (along with Girls And Boys) in Fitzroy. Enjoyed the relaxing ambience, the nice service, golden chai lattes (pictured), gyozas, spring rolls and the pizza with the kale topping. Though I think the vegan cheese layer on the pizza could use a little more generosity to add the cheesiness and balance out the tartness of the kale and olives. I also wish that Vegie Bar can have a full vegan menu instead of offering a few non-vegan options like dairy on their menu as the non-vegan options are just unnecessary. In fact, I think Vegie Bar has the potential to go vegan as a similar business in Malaysia called The Hungry Tapir has made the move recently. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and definitely worth recommending to others who are in town.

A good variety in the menu. Delicious food. Able to order online via a QR code or the more traditional through the menu and a person route.

The con was the prices, it is pricey and sadly the flavours aren't mind blowing which would justify the price.

Decent feed - Edit
It's nice going to a restaurant and having the whole menu to choose from. Food is decent, but the vibe is a little grunge for me. Very typical of that area and demographic. I'd still happily eat there though. Maybe I just prefer a more formal dining experience... or maybe I'm getting old.
