Great Menu and Ok Food - Edit

I went for Supper with my hubby, on a Saturday. This was our second time at this Walnut Creek location, the first was earlier this year.

My husband ordered the black bean burger this time, with a side choice of coconut milk veggie soup. I tasted the soup and thought it was all right, not too creamy, and tiny little veggies, but still decent. He inhaled his burger, so I think he liked it. I had the "snack size" macaroni & cheese, which was pretty good, creamy, with a mellow cheesey taste. I also had the "Summer menu" item of Thai Tacos, which has vegan chicken (too spongy a texture for my taste, but still ok to eat), some veggies (ok) and green curry sauce. The sauce was too thin, and dripped all over my hands and onto the plate - which really drives me nuts! If they could have cooked the curry into the "chicken", that would be better. I would NOT recommend ordering this dish.

I also got a pre-packed chocolate chip big cookie to take home. It was reasonably good, soft type cookie with flavorful chips. We also liked the iced teas, which are self serve at the station on the side of the counter, so you can refill all you want. My hubby LOVES drinking his fill of refills. Ha.

The girl who took our order at the counter was very friendly and patient. We had a gift card to use (weren't able to take it the last time) and that was why we went back, actually. She put it through for us, so we were pleased. They keep the tables and floors as clean as they are able too. Also has good patio tables if you want to eat outdoors and watch the people walk by.

Pros: Lots of interesting all Vegan menu options, Good Value, Friendly staff

Meh - Edit

My husband and I were excited to try a vegan cafe closer to home than our beloved Herbivore in Berkeley. Veggie Grill is a pleasant and low-key cafe with a vegan menu. A good start. It goes downhill from there. Over priced items loaded with highly processed soy things. Small portions and not particularly interesting taste. It has the feel of a slick chain concept and is not health focused. I'm sure it will appeal to a certain sort of vegan, as it is adequate and the staff is really sweet. We won't be back.

Pros: Nice staff, All vegan menu, Pleasant ambiance

Cons: Highly processed "meat" items, Unimaginative menu choices, Overpriced for what it is.

great place for lunch - Edit

We went here for lunch. It was difficult to choose as there were so many great options. I went for a kale and quinoa burger which was delicious and my friend went for the crispy 'chicken' sandwich which was good too. It was so delicious, we returned the following day.

Delicious plant food options - Edit

I really enjoyed their crispy cauliflower.
I highly recommend it for people that crave the orange chicken from panda express. I ordered the Bombay salad which was extremely flavorful and filling. I went with non-vegans that ordered mock-meat options and weren't impressed but maybe that's because they were expecting it to be exactly like real meat.. who knows. I prefer eating plant foods because even mock-meat freaks me out so if I were you I'd order something you know you'd like.

Pros: crispy cauliflower, filling food, 100% plant-based

Cons: lots of mock meat, crowded

Not as good as I first thought - Edit

Contra Costa County, 12 miles east of Oakland, has not had even one vegan restaurant until Veggie Grill came to Walnut Creek last month. The response was overwhelming at first, and we loved it at the beginning. We have noticed a drop in popularity, and personally, I found that the menu, although varied enough, seemed to have a few really good highlights, with a few that just weren't tasty. We will still try it once in a while, but it did not meet our original rave review status.

Pros: A few very good choices, Clever and quick ordering and delivery., Clean and colorful

Cons: Needs better control of spices., A few less than adequate choices
