Could be better.. - Edit

Was excited to visit VegeTable with my vegan buddies. We went there during off-peak hours in a weekday. Thus, the place was pretty empty and felt like we we had the place all by ourselves. It's little pricey and I think it's worse when the food is not up to the standard of the price we pay. We ordered some small dishes and desserts to share.. I remember the server reminded us in advance one of the dishes we ordered was full of flavours as they use strong seasoning and if we were OK with that. In the end, the dish was completely different from what she told us - it was bland and almost tasteless! Anyways, I don't think the food is up to standard, there's room for improvement.

Cons: Pricey

Mehhhh Not worth the price - Edit

They got many things on the menu and I've tried quite a few of them when visiting with my boyfriend but most of them are too oily and the taste was a little bit weird. Most of all, the price was way too high for the quality of food that they've served.

Pros: Nice environment

Cons: Pricy, Food is not outstanding

VegeTable - Edit

I've been here thrice in my two recent trips to Taipei.

On our first visit we ordered a four-person set meal for lunch. Pizzas had run out by then, and we substituted it with another generous salad. Food was fresh and delicious, and left such a good impression on my pescatarian mum (and also our omnivorous Taiwanese friend) that my mum wanted to visit again on the same trip.

Before we left Taipei, we went back for individual lunch sets, which again was served in generous portions. I highly recommend this if you're travelling alone, if this promotion is still available.

Our third visit a few months later was very rushed, as we arrived half an hour before closing. Dishes arrived amazingly quickly, but, as you can imagine, it wasn't the most leisurely of meals.

Pros: Vegan, with clearly marked allium-free options, Delicious, well-presented food, Friendly staff

Cons: Not cheap by Taiwanese standards

Not worth it - Edit

The meal was really over priced and small servings and the service was just okay. We ordered two mains and one soup cost $1111 twd. The food was really nothing special, not worth what you are paying and don't get you full. We ending up went to vegecreek afterwards for more food..

Pros: Good atmosphere , Nice decoration

Cons: Over priced , Small servings

Somewhat disappointing, but Early Days - Edit

This restaurant is connected with Tosca, one of my favourite mid-range vegan restaurants in Kyoto, which is probably the vegan capital of Asia. I was very excited to hear that the lifelong vegan owner was opening a restaurant in Taipei, and excited to hear that a new Japanese restaurant was opening, but didn't realise that VegeTable was either of these when I went there.

But I must admit I was disappointed. VegeTable has a nice interior, and the food was good - not outstanding, but certainly a nice dining experience, quality-wise. But it was just too expensive for what it was: I ordered two dishes, which came to NT560, and left hungry enough that had I had the time I would have gone to the nearby Veggie Creek Dunnan store for 'dinner' afterwards (I didn't have time, so dinner was convenience store food). I think a filling meal would cost around NT1000 per person, with drinks extra, and I don't think the food is worth that.
I think it's more expensive than Tosca, and this is Taipei, not Kyoto.

Also, the (non-vegan) owner didn't know anything about whether or not his wine was vegan, or even that wines usually aren't vegan. This is a bad sign for a vegan restaurant, as it calls into doubt how careful he is with the food.

It's early days, and there's certainly a niche market for vegan Japanese food in Taipei, and Tosca is brilliant, so I hope things will improve. But this was my first experience at VegeTable, and I'm in no hurry to return.

Pros: good vegan food (I hope), Japanese food!, pleasant interior

Cons: very expensive, appears to serve non-vegan drinks
