Hit and Miss - Edit

Having been here a couple of times in the last week, I can highly recommend the value-for-money Saturday vegan breakfast menu - scrambled tofu, beans, toast, mushrooms, juice and tea, all for only £5, all home-made, and all delicious. I haven't been there during the week yet, so I can't vouch for the rest of the menu, but if it follows suit it would make a good lunchtime stop. The staff are also very friendly and helpful, and while the place has never been massively full when I've gone, there's always been enough people to give it a welcoming atmosphere.

If I have a slight gripe it's only that the opening hours are rather limited, especially closing at 2pm on a Saturday, but as most of the staff are volunteers, I guess that can't be helped. Otherwise, a very good addition to the previously rather limited range of veggie places in Brum.

Update: Having been here again more recently a couple of times, I have unfortunately dropped the place by a point in my rating - having gone back expecting another excellent Saturday brunch, I was very disappointed to receive the most bizarrely tasteless and dry veggie sausage in existence along with some rather so-so vegetables, toast and scrambled egg. So it seems it may be a bit hit and miss - sometimes you get lucky and everything falls right, sometimes...well, not so much...

Great cake! - Edit

I was in Birmingham for a conference in the Town Hall. Catering was adequte but no vegan cakes! So I was able to nip to Veged Out every day for cake and some much needed peace and quiet. Over the three days, I had chocolate cherry, lemon drizzle and bakewell cake. All were excellent and only £1 a generous slice. The highlight of my visit to Birmingham.

Pros: delicious cake, cheap, quiet

I've only been here once and had the breakfast, it's in an odd location and a bit tricky to find if you don't know where you're going but once you're inside it's quite nice. I had the breakfast which was really good and filling, you get big portions and loads for your money, tea/coffee, orange juice or apple juice and the full breakfast (big portions) for £5.

The staff were very friendly and helpful. As always would prefer if it were 100% vegan, but definitely heading in the right direction! Would recommend this place and I will definitely go again.

Pros: Great value, Friendly staff, Nice community feel

Cons: Not in the nicest location, Not 100% Vegan!

Thumbs Up - Edit

In a bit of a dingy location under street level just off Broad Street but it serves good quality tasty and hearty fuctional vegan and vegetarian food in pleasant surroundings once inside. At least one main dish is vegan every day such as lentil curry with rice. All mains are only £4 and vegan cakes are £1. I'd happily pay more to support such a good cause. Hope it's here for a long time to come.

Pros: cheap, philosophy, community

Cons: basic food, location

Pls Support this Place - Great Food & Good Cause - Edit

Being fairly new to the veggie scene in the Midlands after a few years travelling overseas, I checked out Happy Cow to find a veggie place to try in Birmingham today. Having seen a listing for 'Veged Out' but with no detailed reviews, I thought I'd give it a go, not knowing what to expect.
All I can say is that I was pleasantly surprised, with a generous & tasty portion, at an incredible price. I had the spinach and butternut(?) lasagna, served with fresh salad, all for only £4!
Alas, not many people were dining there whilst I was there, which is a downright shame ( I was the only one there for a while) so I just wanted to spread the word. Plus proceeds from the venture go to help support local causes ( I think).
Veged out is up there with 'Gorilla Food' in Vancouver and 'Revive' in Auckland, NZ so a call out to the people of Birmingham seems necessary- instead of a Boot's meal deal for lunch, try Vegged Out - its the same price, tastes much better and supports a great cause!

Pros: Good food, Generous portions, Incredibly good value

Cons: Location is a little off the beaten path
