Great food and place - Edit

The owners of Vegan Vegan (another vegan restaurant) generously open their house to offer lunch during weekdays. Wonderful simple and cosy place with excellent, simple food.

Not wheelchair friendly - Edit

It is extremely difficult to find in that it is at the end of a suburban-looking dead-end street that you would never imagine had any business there, let alone a vegan restaurant. I went with a friend who is a wheelchair user and as well as being difficult to get down along the pavement, it is very difficult to get into the garden and across to the seating. I'm not suggesting they claimed otherwise, but in this day and age (and bearing in mind that we were there right after the Paralympics!) venues need to take more responsibility about being inclusive. It is not as if they have to convert a building: they only need to make the path normal, in fact. We arrived within the advertised hours and after sitting at a table for quite a while the owner(?) eventually turned up and told us there was none of the daily lunch left. He put something together for us instead, but I was a bit unsure if we were getting the equivalent for the same price. It seemed very expensive for what it was, and was not especially tasty: it was like what people stereotype vegan food to be like and I felt a bit embarrassed to have dragged my omnivore friend there. I'd probably give them the benefit of the doubt and try again when in Rio, but alone.

Pros: All vegan, In a garden

Cons: Not wheelchair friendly, Stereotypical food, Expensive for what you get

Simple and good - Edit

The dishes I tried were really tasty as simple home-cooked comfort food. But the thing I liked the most was certainly the place itself, so calm that one could even forget you're in the middle of a big city.

good food in a country of carnivores - Edit

My wife and I went here twice last week while in Rio and it didn't disappoint. Being vegan in Rio can be tough so after doing some prep on happy cow we headed here. Initially it was hard to find but with perseverance we got there! Set in a lovely garden the friendly non English speaking staff sorted us out. The food was very good so we went back the next day. Definitely recommended. Payment didn't seem optional but was done on a honour system with the cash box left on the side.

Unbelievably great - Edit

I loved, loved, loved this place. Every time I went it was delicious. Just note that it's in a fairly obscure location, and they really do not like people getting there after 3:30... it's basically a magical vegetarian garden in someone's home. The honor system cash box just emphasizes how truly special this place is. Note that it's the same family as the other two veg places in the area, but the taste, style, and setting is much different. If you only have time to try a few vegan places in the city, get to this little place and enjoy. Keep in mind that it's at the end of a tiny, almost hidden little alleyway, and is not marked from the outside. Just follow the directions and you'll get there; it's a little gate on your right-hand side, right before reaching the end of the street.

Pros: Magical, Scrumptious, Great staff

Cons: Limited opening hours, Hard to find

A vegan oasis in Rio de Janeiro - Edit

Vegana Chacara is simply awesome! Located at the end of a small dead end street in Botafogo, with no sign, you might wonder if you're stepping into someone's private yard when you lift the latch on the gate. Inside you're greeted by friendly staff and can sit either outside in the lush garden, or inside. There are two plates of the day, varying by day, and each consists of a soup or salad, followed by a main plate with several different portions on it. The food was excellent, and substantial servings to boot. Desert is also included in your 30 Reais (about $15), and the warm banana torte is a home run. Payment is cash only, in an honor system box, and don't forget to tip your server separately. Lunch only, until 2:30 PM. If you are looking for vegan or veg food in Rio, this gem is well worth seeking out!

Pros: beautiful setting outdoor/indoor, excellent food, relaxing, restorative oasis

Cons: lunch only, slightly challenging to find

Excellent - Edit

I had an excellent lunch here today, which I really enjoyed. It was soup followed by a savoury pancake with rice, beans and green vegetables, then a delicious banana cake for dessert. Everything had a very health-conscious feel to it, but still managed to be very tasty. I loved the relaxed, calm ambience and the beautiful garden, and the staff were incredibly helpful and friendly. Love this place!

Pros: Great food, Set in a beautiful garden, Staff are friendly and helpful

great place - Edit

Beautiful people and calm place.
It looks like a regular house, very clean and calm place in the city.
They serve great food: one is the traditional feijoada and the other is a plate of the day.
The food is very balanced and fresh.
Best part: voluntary payment !!!

Pros: all

Cons: none

Beautiful and nice food! - Edit

Hans Staden is a tiny street in the middle of busy Botafogo. With only houses, its very quiet and relaxing. The house of Vegana Chacara is the one with the more exuberant garden, full of flowers, trees and various plants. There in the shade of the outdoors tables, the customers can enjoy the choice of the restaurant. They have a daily offer, with better price and 2 or 3 fixed options. The day option includes salad and dessert and people can choose to eat a whole or half portion. To drink, self made juices and teas. Its an amazing experience!

Pros: ambience, friendly staff, excellent food

Cons: open hours
